Just a reminder that the National College of Teaching and Leadership expect Teaching Alliances to focus their work and support on the so called ‘Big 3’ (reduced from the big 6!) which are: ● coordinating and delivering high quality school-based Initial Teacher Training ● providing high quality school-to-school support to spread John Williams Executive Head excellent practice, particularly to schools that need it most Hillborough Junior, Lead School ● providing evidence-based professional and leadership development for teachers and leaders across their network We are keen to ensure we can support you in your efforts to improve pupil attainment and narrow the achievement gap for disadvantaged pupils. To this end, we always welcome your views and suggestions on the kind of programmes which you would find most helpful in bringing these improvements about. Don’t forget, we are working closely with the Local Authority (LA) to develop a team of Local Leaders of Education who the LA can confidently deploy to schools in need of support. I would encourage you to make an application; appointments and training to be confirmed this term. If you or a colleague have a research project in mind and would like some funding, we have decided to award grants of up to £500 to help. If this is of interest, please get in touch with Tony Cotton for further details. John Williams Wenlock Church of England Junior School 3 ABOUT LUTON FIRST TSA We are an established cross-phase alliance of twenty one school partners, an initial teacher training provider and the local authority. As our corporate name suggests, we are passionate about the attainment and achievement of the young people of Luton and indeed, throughout Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and beyond. We are able to work with schools under any kind of governance arrangements and membership of the alliance is not a pre-requisite to access the benefits which the Teaching School has to offer. The original members of the alliance form the basis of a steering group which provides Quality Assurance for a range of programmes which are available to all schools to support their school improvement priorities. We believe a world class system of education is embedded in the spirit of partnership and a sharing of the expertise within that family of providers. To this end, we offer bespoke cross-phase school to school support packages that focus on the quality of teaching and learning, curriculum development and all aspects of leadership and management. We look forward to working ‘with’ you. HOW IT ALL STARTED The journey to acquire Teaching School status began in March 2011 with a visit to Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Invited speakers eruditely presented their vision of the future of education, the central platform of which was the establishment of a network of Teaching School Alliances to provide a plethora of services including School to School support, CPD and Succession Planning. The Teaching School concept, we were informed, was based on the Teaching Hospital Model, which had served the Health Service for a number of years by providing Clinical Excellence in Training and Research. This initial meeting led to the establishment of the ‘Luton First’ Teaching School Alliance which was made up of 12 schools working with the Local Authority and the ‘Shire SCITT’. The School Direct (salaried) training route will be offered, through the Hillborough Junior School/Shire Foundation Alliance schools, with an allocation of up to 32 places. School Direct (salaried) route This is an employment-based route into teaching intended for high quality graduates with three or more years career experience. School Direct (salaried) trainees earn a salary while they train in their employing school. The majority of training takes place in the employing and second placement schools, including substantial teaching experience. There is also a centre-based training element consisting of 23 days of training based at the Shire Foundation located in Hillborough Junior School, Luton. For this reason HJS/Shire Alliance can only work with trainees/schools located within a 30 mile radius of the training centre. Trainees on this route may also opt to undertake a PGCE qualification. On successful completion, 60 credits at Masters level are awarded by the University of Buckingham. Entry qualifications and career experience requirements: ● Honours degree: 2:2 or above preferably in a primary curriculum subject area or education- based. ● 3 or more years career experience prior to application. HJS/Shire Alliance will expect that at least 6 months of this experience will have been within a UK school or educational setting. ● GCSE English language, mathematics and science Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent). HJS/ Shire Alliance will consider applicants who have one of these qualifications pending, but they must all be in place by the date of enrolment of the programme. Recognised equivalency tests are accepted. ● Overseas equivalent qualifications are accepted if they have been certified through NARIC [National Academic Recognition Centre] ● Literacy and numeracy professional skills tests must be passed within 6 weeks of the date of interview. 6 INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING (continued) Debarring Barring Service (DBS)/Medical checks HJS/Shire Foundation Alliance schools are committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and they expect all trainees to share this commitment. All applicants who are offered a School Direct training place will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure Check and a medical check prior to the start of the course. Application and selection for interview Applications can only be made through the UCAS Teacher Training website: www.ucas.com/ apply/teacher-training. As part of the application process, applicants must supply the names and contact details of two referees who have agreed to supply references. One reference must be from a school/ educational setting where they have worked within the last year. The other reference should be an academic reference from their university, if they gained their degree within the last five years. (For further guidance about references see the UCAS website). Applicants must complete all the required personal details on the form and should include the date they have registered for the professional skills tests. They must also provide a personal statement. This statement is graded as part of the selection process. It is an opportunity for applicants to describe the qualities, skills and experience which they feel makes them suitable for a career in teaching.
