PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND COMMAND Veterans’ Service Recognition Book Volume 17 Dedicated to all Prince Edward Islanders who served their country in times of war and peace. THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION - MILITARY SERVICE RECOGNITION We are lucky to live in a beautiful province and country built on the pillars of democracy, human rights and respect for others. We enjoy the freedoms we live with today because of generations of Canadians who chose to serve their communities and country. Islanders have a proud tradition of answering the call of duty in times of conflict and in times of peace. We are grateful to our veterans and current serving members of our Canadian Armed Forces for all they have done to keep us safe here at home, and we are humbled by their ongoing efforts to help those in need around the world. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. As we reflect on that important moment in history and look ahead to Remembrance Day, we pause to honour those courageous individuals and all members of our armed forces family who offered their service for the peace and security of our world. On behalf of the Government of Prince Edward Island, thank you to The Royal Canadian Legion - PEI Command on the annual publication of the 7FUFSBOTh Service Recognition Book and for your longstanding commitment to honouring the memory and contributions of our men and women in uniform every day. This war came at a tremendous cost to our nation and to our precious Island homes. Very many of our WWII Veterans are no longer with us, but we continue to Remember them and honour their contribution to ending WWII. They paid a steep price for the freedom we enjoy today. John Maxwell Edmunds wrote in 1916 ‘For your Tomorrow, we gave our Today’. May we never forget this sentiment and raise our children to understand and respect the contributions these military men and women have made and continue to make. We can be immensely proud of the role our Canadian soldiers make in peacekeeping and military actions which continue to operate in theatres around the world. They too have and are paying a high price for these actions. This year we all are fighting once again, this time against the worldwide Covid-19 virus pandemic. We are facing restrictions that have not been seen since the end of WWII. This virus has affected all our lives clear across our country and the world. Businesses, people, homes, and Legions are all affected. This epidemic will not make us weaker, but it will serve to strengthen our commitment to keep our Legion Branches flourishing in these very trying times. Remembrance services will be drastically altered, the devoted crowds will be thinned to a minimum while new online methods may be used to view our Remembrance services. This will not diminish our dedication to and our mandate to Honour those who fought and died for our country on this November 11th. This booklet continues to provide a vital way to remember those who have served. On behalf of the Prince Edward Island Command executive council of The Royal Canadian Legion, I wish to express our gratitude and appreciation for the countless volunteer hours logged by our members, staff, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Legion. It is through the strong effort of this booklet and our organization that we will continue our strong community support to develop and fund programs for our Veterans, seniors, and youth. “We will remember them.” - « Nous nous souviendrons d’eux.» Duane MacEwen Provincial President Prince Edward Island Command The Royal Canadian Legion VETERANS’ SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK – VOLUME 17 / 3 Military Service Recognition Book - Volume 17 Table of Contents MESSAGES GALLANT, Joseph Mills . .55 MATTHEWS, Myrl Clifford . .76 Message from the Premier . .1 GALLANT, Joseph S. .55 MATTHEWS, Wilfred Laurier . .76 Message from Command President . .3 GALLANT, Lawrence Joseph . .57 McCORMACK, Michael . .76 Message from Lieutenant Governor . .5 GALLANT, Paul George . .57 McDONALD, Victor J. .77 GALLANT, William Henry . .57 McKENNA, F.
