León Originally founded in the XII century, it was rebuilt in 1515 after its destruction. The Parador is located in the San Marcos square, and is famous for its 100 meters long Plateresque-style façade. The Parador houses important masterpieces of art that can be contemplated by the visitor, the Capitular room and the cloister, a church, a choir together with big courtyards and gardens. n LEON CITY The capital of the Old Kingdom of Leon surprises the traveller who arrives here for the first time, with its impressive historical and artistic monuments, the Cathedral, San Marcos, San Isidoro, that form part of a modern city full of gardened plazas, parks, fountains and broad avenues. This harmonious combination of venerable stones impregnated with history, with an urban development respecting the environment and the quality of life, makes the City of Leon one of the most popular destinations for Cultural Tourism. The tradition of welcoming travellers since the times when Leon was a city on the route of the Camino de Santiago (St. James Way), in the Early Middle Ages, is still alive and well. If a thousand years ago the people of Leon knew how to give shelter to the pilgrim, today the City of Leon is a welcoming metropolis with an up-to- date range of hotels, good restaurants and bars, cultural activity and permanent entertainment. Soon after arriving by road or by rail, the traveller will immediately encounter the hospitality of its people who know how to be good hosts with simplicity and wisdom.
