Introduction The aim of ‘Sitefinder’ is to provide the basic details of over Helipad sites which are known to accept helicopters, are advertising their willingness to accept helicopters or have accepted helicopters in the past. Sites are listed alphabetically by location (nearest city/town etc), and site numbers relate to the indicated positions on the relevant maps which are intended to be sufficiently accurate to enable the user to locate the site by cross-referring to his/her aeronautical charts and 1:50,000 scale O/S maps. ID letters are included in all grid references to accommodate GPS/SatNav systems. Wherever possible, a description of the actual landing area is given and in the few cases where the details were not forthcoming this is indicated by TFD – ‘telephone for details’. The existence of power cables, where known, has been indicated even in some cases as far out as 2km from the site. This may seem extreme but as we all know, these ’helicopter catchers’ pose a very real danger particularly in poor visibility and when a pilot’s look-out may be momentarily distracted during the final stages of the flight when trying to locate the site and I think too much information regarding this threat is better than too little! The indices for England, Wales and Scotland begin- ning on page 58 list all the sites alphabetically by name and give both the site and page numbers. Finally, as change of ownership/development of the site could change over the years, this could alter its availability or suitability and for this reason all sites should be regarded as PPR. ‘Prior permission required’. To enhance flight safety further, a new VHF radio frequency 135.475 known as SAFETYCOM has been introduced for use at or in the vicinity of aerodromes, airstrips and Helipad Sites where no specific radio frequency is notified. Procedures for use of the frequency are published in the Air Pilot’s Manual Volume 7 - Radio Telephony and in the Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) 103/2004 (Yellow 153). Any positive feed-back on site details would be welcome and I hope this publication will prove a useful aid to anyone involved in flight-planning helicopter operations of any kind in the UK and Irish Republic.
