2016 HBSA Achievement in Architecture Awards Jury Announcement / Call for Entries Burlington, ON – September 28, 2016 The Hamilton Burlington Society of Architects (HBSA) announced today the names of those selected to form the Jury Panel for the 2016 HBSA Achievement in Architecture Awards. The jurists will independently select the recipients of the Awards of Excellence in seven categories: Heritage/Adaptive Re-Use, Renovation (Residential), Renovation (Mixed Use/Commercial), Renovation (Institutional), New Residential, New Mixed Use/Commercial, New Institutional. The Jury Panel will convene in late October 2016 to review the submitted projects. The five members of the Jury Panel for the 2016 HBSA Achievement in Architecture Awards are: Mitchell Hall, Principal, KPMB Architects Alex Lukachko, Principal, Sr. Building Science Specialist, RDH Building Science Inc. The HBSA Achievement in Architecture Awards, established in 2014, are given every two years to projects that set new standards of excellence in architecture, with consideration for form, function, innovation and sustainability. Through these Award presentations, the HBSA seeks to: recognize HBSA architect members and others for their achievements in relation to the profession of architecture; develop high public awareness and understanding of the importance of architecture and the value of design; and encourage architects to strive for excellence in architecture and thereby promote the advancement of architecture. Since joining KPMB Architects in 1989, he has demonstrated a commitment to innovation, high standards of execution and craftsmanship in all aspects of his design work. He was made an Associate in 1995 and Principal in 2011. Mitchell has worked on a number of KPMB’s early Governor General award-winning projects, including Kitchener City Hall, Woodsworth College at the University of Toronto, and the Design Exchange, the former Toronto Stock exchange that was transformed into an exhibition and event space for design. He was the KPMB associate-in-charge of the Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence, a long-term care facility designed to transform the institutional environment. He was also the associate- in-charge of the internationally acclaimed Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Winery that merges contemporary wine-making technologies with an authentic architectural response to the agricultural region of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the McGill University and Genome Quebec Innovation Centre in Montreal. In 2005, he completed his role as design associate for the Celia Franca Centre, a dance training facility for Canada’s National Ballet School. Additional recent projects include the Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre at the University of Waterloo and the Health Sciences Waterfront Campus for Toronto’s George Brown College. Mitchell’s current projects include the new Science and Academic Building at the University of Lethbridge in Lethbridge, Alberta, the Assiniboine Park Conservatory in Winnipeg, the Ottawa Art Gallery and Arts Court Redevelopment, and the Phase 1C Redevelopment of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. Alex Lukachko, Principal, Sr. Building Science Specialist, RDH Building Science Inc. Alex Lukachko is a Senior Building Science Specialist with RDH Building Science Inc. He manages the firm’s Ontario region and consults with clients in Canada and the United States, including building material manufacturers, constructors, and architecture firms. Alex also teaches the integration of energy, building science and design concepts in the architecture programs at the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto. Alex has active research interests in the development of future building enclosure systems and the design of high performance, low environmental impact buildings. In particular, he is interested in the link between architectural design and quality assurance that ensures high building performance. These interests are part of a long-term pursuit of effective (and measurable) sustainable building practices. 2016 HBSA Achievement in Architecture Awards | News Release | 2 John McMinn, Professor, University of Waterloo School of Architecture Architect, MJ | architecture John McMinn graduated from McGill University in 1983 and the Architectural Association (AA), London in 1990. He spent the early part of his career working in London and Paris with Peter Rice and Ove Arup International. He has taught at several schools of architecture, including the AA in London, the University of Toronto, and since 1999, at the University of Waterloo. In 1992, John was awarded the Canada Council Prix de Rome in Architecture. In addition to teaching, he maintains an active practice MJ Architecture in partnership with Melana Janzen, and has contributed to numerous architectural journals. John has been involved in a variety publications and curatorial projects, including Exploring Materials: The Work of Peter Rice (1992), RIBA Gold Medal exhibition and catalogue, (co-author with Barbara Anne Campbell), editorial and design consultant for An Engineer Imagines (1994) by Peter Rice, Yolles: A Canadian Engineering Legacy (2002) book and travelling exhibition, (co-author with Beth Kapusta), 41° to 66° Architecture in Canada: Region, Culture, Tectonics, (co-author with Marco Polo) representing Canada at the 2008 Venice Biennale, Drawing Ambience, Alvin Boyarsky and the Architectural Association, Exhibition Coordinator, Design at Riverside Gallery (2016) (curators Jan Howard and Igor Marjanovic). Mary Lou Tanner, Director of Planning and Building, City of Burlington Mary Lou is currently the Director of Planning and Building for the City of Burlington. Prior to that, she was the Chief Planner for Niagara Region and was Acting Commissioner of Planning and Development Services for Niagara Region. With over 25 years of experience working in the public sector, Tanner has previously worked at the City of Hamilton and Halton Region where she held a variety of planning roles and led infrastructure planning in public works. She has developed extensive project management expertise, including managing major planning projects including update of the Region of Niagara Official Plan - Imagine Niagara. As a result she has considerable experience hiring and managing consultants from the public sector perspective. Mary Lou served as the President of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute from 2011 to 2013 and has received numerous national and provincial awards for planning practice. Tanner is a graduate of the Planning School at Queen’s University. Gerarda (Geri) Tino, Associate Architect, ATA Architects Inc. A graduate from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture, and an Associate Architect with the award winning firm, ATA Architects Inc., Geri brings a multi faceted approach to architecture and design through the various intricacies of art, travel and community involvement.
