It is one of the largest departments of the University. There is a staff complement of over 550, and an annual turnover of almost £50 million. The Department has over 60 postgraduate research students and a taught MSc course with 25 students per year. The Department contains world-renowned population health research groups, including the Clinical Trial Service Unit and Epidemiology Studies Unit (CTSU), the Cancer Epidemiology Unit (CEU), the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU), the George Institute for Global Health, and other groups working on public health, health economics, ethics and health record linkage. The wide range of opportunities for research within the department includes access to very large data-sets from clinical trials, meta-analyses and epidemiology cohorts. For further information please visit: www.georgeinstitute.org JOB DESCRIPTION Overview of the role The George Institute, in collaboration with other divisions and departments in the University, have recently established an exciting programme of research on integrated digital health for use by patients with chronic diseases or by non-physician healthcare workers. 3 Within an interdisciplinary team of researchers, we are seeking a software developer to lead the development and maintenance of the Institute’s native (iOS and Android) and cross- platform applications for use by patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers. The candidate will take a key role in the programme, including the responsibility for the design, development and maintenance of back-end and front-end codes of the apps. This is a NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (BRC, www.oxfordbrc.org) funded post as part of the new Prevention and Populations Research Theme and is available for two years in the first instance. You will work in close collaboration with our regional and international partners, including the Oxford University Hospital Trusts, Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and the Department of Primary Care Research. The successful applicant will report to the Deputy Director of the Institute, Dr Kazem Rahimi. Responsibilities / Duties Lead the technical design, development, testing, and maintenances of cross-platform consumer applications (including graphical presentation of data) Make decisions on the best platforms of choice (e.g., native apps vs. web-based apps, back-end and front-end communication protocols, etc.). Providing user support and enhancement of applications. Work with clinicians, researchers, data managers, and other stakeholders to help ensure that applications comply with existing UX standards and confidentiality requirements. Participate in scientific discussion and training, with regard to new software technologies and clinical research applications, and make substantial contributions to research publications and technical reports. Play an integral role within an interdisciplinary team of researchers. Strong background in web-services design and maintenance Strong programming background in Python (e.g., Django) and other backend technologies (including, but not limited to, API development) Track-record in developing front-end solutions in HTML5 and JavaScript 4 Track-record in developing Android and/or iOS apps Familiarity with data-heavy app development (for both back-end and front-end) Creativity, multi-criteria problem solving, and the ability to / interest in learning new techniques and concepts Ability to work effectively as part of a team Excellent time management and organisational skills and ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines. Independence and initiative to work unsupervised with attention to detail.
