Letter from the Chair of the Board of Trustees Dear Alumnae Benefactors and Friends of the Academy of Mount St. Ursula: I could never have imagined that more than fifty years after graduating from the Academy of Mount St. Ursula that I would have the great honor and privilege of serving as the Chair of the Board of Trustees. Looking back at that young girl who graduated from the school in June of 1969, I can’t help but consider the tremendous influence that the school had upon me and my life’s choices and work. AMSU is where I learned about leadership that was grounded in an obligation to serve others. Much like many of our current students, I was the first in my family to attend college. I credit my experiences at the Mount for setting me on a path that opened the door to numerous possibilities and a rich and rewarding career in education that was always predicated on the principle of Serviam. I am pleased to be joined at the school by a remarkable and dedicated team of fellow trustees who generously give their time and talents to the school’s success and growth. This past year has presented many unique and challenging situations for all Americans. Teachers and school administrators, in particular, have had to adapt to and address a whole range of instructional approaches as lessons and educational experiences are presented both in person and remotely. We are so grateful to the truly amazing faculty and staff of the AMSU, who under the leadership of our dedicated principal, Sr. Jean Marie Humphries, osu, PhD, have demonstrated unparalleled creativity, strength, and commitment to the Ursuline mission of the school. A stellar and successful Middle States Accreditation process in November of 2019, the high levels of college acceptances, scholarships, and grants which are outlined in this report are the result of rigorous academic requirements and high standards for each discipline. However, beyond these academic achievements and, perhaps, even more importantly in the face of this global pandemic, is the commitment to each student’s emotional and spiritual growth. This mission of educating young women of the Bronx in the Ursuline tradition has never been more compelling and relevant, especially as we celebrate our 165th anniversary as the oldest continuously operating school for girls in the United States. AMSU continues to be a place where we launch young women into the universe ready to realize their talents and make long-standing contributions. We recognize and are grateful for the strong financial assistance provided through the Ursuline Sisters and their provincial leadership. Serving a diverse urban community during these unprecedented times remains a financial challenge. Your contributions help make these educational opportunities available for those who have great financial need and help close the gap between tuition charged and the cost of a student’s education. Thank you for your on-going and generous support of the school as we celebrate its remarkable history and 165th anniversary. With gratitude, Diane Ramos-Kelly, Ed.D. We were enjoying learning and teaching in the classrooms then suddenly one day in March 2020, it all changed. We had to learn and teach remotely. St. Angela advised the Ursulines to change with the times, and that is exactly what we did! All at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula pivoted quickly and quite successfully to learning and teaching remotely through various online platforms. The wonderful courage and grace all displayed through these difficult times was amazing. Thank God we had purchased Chromebooks for each student the previous academic year, and had already started teaching periodically without textbooks, paper, and pencils. We had trial runs and were ready for this “new normal.” Since March 2020, we have kept to our routine of morning prayers, attendance, and daily instruction thru Google Meets, our school database system of Blackbaud, and online submission of work. It has not been easy, but we continue to provide our quality Catholic education with Ursuline values to our young women of the Bronx, Manhattan, and lower Westchester. We have been educating young women since 1855, and we plan to keep marching forward no matter what adversity we encounter! Some of our great accomplishments and events during the 2019-2020 school year include: AMSU had a positive visit by Middle States Re-Accreditation Team in November 2019 with the receipt of Re-Accreditation for seven years in April 2020. AMSU’s volleyball team won the NY Catholic High School Athletic Association Division B
