Day 4: Thursday, December 5, 2019 • Vatican Museums | St. Peter’s Basilica | Free Time Celebrate an early Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. After Mass, take a guided tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, where you will view some of the most inspiring works of art, including Michelangelo’s magnificent fresco of the Last Judgment. Finish with a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, including Michelangelo’s Pieta, the tomb of St. John Paul II, and the Chair of St. Peter. Remainder of the day at leisure. Day 5: Friday, December 6, 2019 • Day Trip to Assisi After an early breakfast, head north through the Roman countryside of vineyards and villas. Arrive in Assisi, the hometown of St. Francis. Celebrate Mass at the Basilica of St. Francis, and venerate the tomb of the beloved saint. Next, visit the Basilica of St. Clare and see the cross that spoke to St. Francis and led him to a life of piety. Enjoy lunch as a group at a local restaurant. Visit San Rufino Church where St. Francis and St. Clare were both baptized. Have some time at leisure to explore this Umbrian town. Return to Rome for dinner on your own. Overnight in Rome. Day 6: Saturday, December 7, 2019 • Ancient Rome | Christian Rome This morning take a guided tour of Ancient Rome, including the Coliseum and Roman Forum. After lunch on your own, visit the major basilicas of Christian Rome, including St. Mary Major and St. John in Lateran, which is the Cathedral of Rome, followed by the newly restored Holy Steps. Finish the tour at St. Paul Outside the Walls. Celebrate Mass at one of these basilcas. Dinner on your own and overnight in Rome. Day 7: Sunday, December 8, 2019 • Second Sunday of Advent | Free day Today, celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent with Mass at St. Patrick Church, home of the American community in Rome. After Mass, you have the option to attend the Sunday Angelus in St. Peter’s Square. Spend the day at leisure tasting Italian food in various cafes or markets, such as Campo de Fiori, or shopping on the famous Via Veneto. Visit the Piazza Navona Christmas Market, which traditionally opens today and enjoy the Christmas decorations throughout the city. Warm up with a hot chocolate or creamy capuccino. While the solemnity is moved to Monday, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is a holiday in Italy. Feast celebrations take place throughout the day at the Column of the Immaculate Conception near the Spanish Steps, including a traditional visit by the Pope at 4:00 p.m. to bring flowers to Our Lady.
