MOD publishes development plans for new Training College at Lyneham The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has published outline plans for the new training college at Lyneham in Wiltshire. In July 2011, the MOD announced that RAF Lyneham had been chosen as the base for a new site which would centralise the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force technical training currently located at a number of sites across the country. At the same time, it was announced the Army would be the first to move into Lyneham and relocate technical training for the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer (REME) from the two existing sites, one at Arborfield in Berkshire, the other at Bordon in Hampshire, by the end of 2015. Once vacated, both of these sites will be sold. Once that move has completed there will be approximately 2000 military and civilian personnel based at Lyneham. The MOD has now launched a consultation period for the public and stakeholders to view the development plans for the site. The MOD has also launched a commercial process to select a construction contractor for the work, and as part of this process, this Friday, 14 December, an Industry Day will be held at Lyneham for potential bidders to view the site. Demolition of some unsafe and redundant buildings at Lyneham will commence early next year. Air Commodore Richard Gammage, head of the Defence Technical Training Change Programme which leads this major MOD project said: “Since July 2011, the MOD has made significant progress in its planning to relocate the Army’s technical training to Lyneham, the first in a series of programmed moves. This Programme will modernise training for the Armed Forces making it more flexible and better able to respond to changes in equipment and learning technologies. This will ultimately support our troops on operations."
