2020 Catalog - University of Scouting Linda Rimkunos, MD, Provost University of Scouting CATALOG – 2020 University of Scouting Welcome to the University of Scouting We are here to provide you a wide range of training opportunities, shared experiences and knowledge suitable for the best of our Scout leadership. Learning opportunities at the University of Scouting are offered through four Colleges - College of Scouting, College of Cub Scouting, College of Commissioner Science, and College of General Studies. In addition, there are two Schools - School of Culinary Arts, and School of Health & Safety. Each year the University of Scouting offers new classes for Scout leaders who want to expand their knowledge and skills, all the while maintaining many of the popular classes. Our sessions cover traditional topics that supplement and expand upon the basic Scouts, BSA training programs. This year, 13 new classes have been added, and many others have been updated to present the most recent information available. We offer the unusual, the non-traditional and often unexpected subjects taught by Scouters with specialized skills and knowledge. Explore the courses we have to offer and take this unique opportunity to broaden your skills. We provide a full day of training and a far greater chance to network than may be available within your own district or council. Come, learn, and enjoy; help bring better Scouting to all our youth. Be sure to review the requirements for a degree and that your schedule reflects those requirements. i CATALOG – 2020 University of Scouting UTILIZING THE PROGRAM CATALOG .................. 2 TROOP EQUIPMENT AND SELECTION ........................................... 12 Scheduling Your Classes ..........................................................................2 EXPERIENCE MAINE HIGH ADVENTURE ...................................... 12 Personal Cellular Phone Use .....................................................................2 HIKING IN CONNECTICUT ................................................................ 12 Scout Uniform at The University of Scouting ...........................................3 INTRODUCTION TO LEAVE NO TRACE.......................................... 12 Accessibility .............................................................................................3 HORNADAY AWARDS ....................................................................... 13 US FLAG ETIQUETTE & CEREMONIES ........................................... 13 DIRECTIONS TO VERNON CENTER MIDDLE SCHOOL........................................................................... 4 MAKING TROOP EMERGENCY AND MOBILIZATION PLANS FUN ........................................................................................................ 13 THE DEGREE PROGRAM ........................................... 5 EVE ON THE TRAIL AND IN THE WILDERNESS ........................... 13 Bachelor’s Degree in Cub Scouting ..........................................................5 EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ORDER OF THE ARROW (OA), BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK ........................... 13 Bachelor’s Degree in Scouting ..................................................................5 UNDER THE STARS – Introduction to Backpacking and Hammock Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies .......................................................5 Camping ................................................................................................. 14 Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts ..........................................................5 HOW TO DO HIGH ADVENTURE ...................................................... 14 Master’s Degree in Cub Scouting .............................................................5 CORE CONCEPTS OF COMMISSIONER SERVICE .......................... 15 Master’s Degree in Scouting .....................................................................5 LINKING DISTRICT RESOURCES ..................................................... 15 Doctorate Degree in Cub Scouting ............................................................5 CONTACTING UNITS .......................................................................... 15 Doctorate Degree in Scouting ...................................................................5 JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE ............................................................. 15 Commissioner Degrees .............................................................................6 COLLABORATIVE ASSESSMENTS ................................................... 15 YEAR ROUND ROUNDTABLE PLANNING...................................... 15 CLASS SCHEDULE ........................................................ 7 ROUNDTABLE AND COMMISSIONER TOOLS ............................... 16 PERSONAL COURSE CHOICES ............................... 10 SCOUTS BSA ROUNDTABLES .......................................................... 16 ON-TIME CHARTER RENEWAL ........................................................ 16 COLLEGE OF SCOUTING ........................................ 11 COMMISSIONER SERVICE FOR UNITS AT RISK ........................... 16 “WHY” NATIONAL YOUTH LEADER TRAINING -
