FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 9, 2018 VRCA announces 2018 Awards of Excellence - Silver Award winners VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) has announced the Silver Award winners in its 2018 Awards of Excellence. These project-specific awards recognize the regional construction association’s finest member companies and features industrial, commercial and institutional projects from across British Columbia. VRCA’s Awards of Excellence is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2018. This year, 49 Silver Award winners have been selected in 15 project categories on the basis of criteria that include the use of innovative techniques, new materials and/or exceptional project management. The Silver Award winners will be honoured at the Awards of Excellence Gala on October 23 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West. At the gala, one Silver Award winner from each project category will be announced as the Gold Award winner in the respective category. “This year, we received a record-setting 205 nominations with a total construction value of more than $2 billion dollars.” said Tony Everett, chairman of VRCA’s Awards of Excellence Committee. “As judges, we were impressed by how companies overcame a range of challenges, from engineering and design firsts to building in difficult weather conditions.” Project award categories recognize general, trade, mechanical and electrical contractors, along with manufacturers and suppliers who deliver an entire project or a component of a project according to specific financial and non-financial criteria. This year’s submissions included a new hotel and casino, post-secondary facilities and student residences, health-care facilities, a transit station upgrade, hydro-electric dam upgrades, port expansions, tenant improvements to office and retail spaces, and both residential and mixed- used towers. All projects have been completed in the past two years. “The Awards of Excellence is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and I continue to be impressed by the scale and complexity of the projects that our members tackle every day,” said Fiona Famulak, VRCA president. “Not only did we see a record number of entries this year, we saw examples of our industry stepping up to face new and unique challenges. Many of this year’s winners are leading the way in reducing the environmental impact of projects through use of new materials and technologies that both enhance the quality of projects and drive value to owners.” In addition to announcing the Gold Award winners at its October 23 gala, VRCA will present Outstanding Achievement awards to companies and individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the industry and to community. The Outstanding Achievement categories include: Lifetime Achievement; Education Leadership; Outstanding Woman in Page 1 of 4 Construction; Innovation and Productivity; Safety; VRCA Member of the Year; U40 Excellence in Construction; and Construction Workplace Health and Safety. At the gala, the VRCA will also award Life Membership to an individual, to honour their significant contributions to the industry and the association.
