Dear Students, Sexual Diversity Studies, once marginal, have now gained a place in the curricula of leading universities in Canada and internationally—and McGill is no exception. McGill’s program is now entering its sixth year and has proven to be very popular. Sexual Diversity Studies have generated a substantial amount of provocative and challenging scholarship across the disciplines. The McGill SDS Minor enables students to engage with a diverse array of critical and empirical perspectives, to study the practical implications of findings concerning sexuality and gender, and to lay the foundations for research at the forefront of investigative theoretical knowledge. Each year we have added to the repertoire of courses and, if the momentum continues, in due course we hope to build the Minor into a Major program. We are delighted that SDS is an integral part of the new Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies. Dear Students, Our interdisciplinary program offers McGill students the opportunity to explore a diversity of issues and themes in the broad field of Women’s Studies. At the undergraduate level, our required courses are WMST 200 Introduction to Women’s Studies and WMST 303 Feminist Theory and Research. For the Honours and Joint Honours Components, our required courses also include WMST 495 D1&D2 Honours/Joint Honours Colloquium in Women’s Studies and WMST 497 D1&D2 Honours/Joint Honours Thesis. In addition to our regularly offered current and special topics “WMST” courses, this year we are pleased to launch WMST 302 Indigenous Women of the North and WMST 501 Feminist Legal Theory. Check our website for the most up to date listing of Special and Current Topics courses and our complementary courses from a wide range of departments. The Graduate Option in Gender and Women’s Studies offers students a cross-disciplinary specialization in feminist, gender and/or women’s studies, deploying a wide array of disciplinary methodologies and modes of inquiry. The option fosters intellectual debate in research undertakings, provides students occasions to work with faculty members across the university to engage in interdisciplinary conversations and exchanges, and broadens students’ professional qualifications. Students pursuing graduate level research in gender and/or women’s issues will read widely in their own disciplines as well as in core Women’s Studies courses in the Option. For the Graduate Option in Gender and Women’s Studies, our required courses include WMST 601 Feminist Theories and Methods and WMST 602 Feminist Research Symposium. To facilitate cohesiveness and community between Women’s Studies students and faculty from a multiplicity of disciplines, students are encouraged to become involved in a variety of events held by the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies that feature McGill-based and visiting scholars, guest speakers and senior researchers from around the world, who participate in the annual IGSF seminar series. Julia Krane, PhD Chair, Women’s Studies Programs & Advisory Committee - 2 - Resources and Facilities The McGill Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (IGSF) The Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (IGSF) was created in March 2009 as an interdisciplinary academic unit in the Faculty of Arts. It was formerly the McGill Centre for Research and Teaching on Women and occupies an elegant, historic greystone residence at 3487 Peel St. The Institute houses five research axes: (1) Representation, Performance, Culture (2) Health and Wellness (3) Historical Perspectives (4) Equity and Justice (5) Policy and Practices and is also the home base for three teaching programs -- undergraduate programs in both Women's Studies and Sexual Diversity Studies, and the Graduate Option in Gender and Women’s Studies. The Institute facilitates the activities of the research axes, hosts visiting scholars, supports student organizations, works with community groups and organizes a seminar series and several major events each academic year.
