Competitors will be divided into two tables by a draw, and an elimination system will be used to produce two finalists, who will compete for the gold medal. The four athletes defeated in the quarterfinals will compete in the two repechage contests, and the winners of these will meet the losers of the semifinals in two bronze medal matches. The two winners of the bronze medal contests are awarded bronze medals, and the losers are placed equal fifth. The losers of the repechage contests are placed equal seventh. The top eight judoka per weight category from the International Judo Federation (IJF) world ranking list, updated at the end of the qualification period, will be seeded. All other judoka will be randomly drawn. Contest duration The contests will all last five minutes (actual time) for men and four minutes (actual time) for women in accordance with the IJF Sport & Organisation Rules (SOR) and Refereeing Rules. Weigh-in The weigh-in for the competition will be conducted at the Olympic Village under the supervision of officials appointed by the IJF. The official weigh-in for each category will take place from 20:00 to 20:30 on the evening before the respective competitions. Each competitor will be allowed only one weight control during the official weigh-in. Competitors must weigh within the limits of the appropriate category and no tolerance will be allowed either above or below the weight category. Differences between the IJF world championships and the Olympic Games The IJF World Championships are open events (up to a maximum of nine male and nine female athletes per country), which means that no qualification is required. There are also team events at the world championships and in the past there has been a World Championships Open. There are no open categories or team events at the Olympic Games. Judo Judô / Judo Changes since the London 2012 Olympic Games The scoring method has been changed. A penalty does not result in a score for the opponent any more. There is also no longer a time limit for the golden score period. The contest will continue until a score or penalty is awarded. The contest time for women has been reduced from five minutes (actual time) to four minutes (actual time). Sport rules and procedures Tiebreak rules within a contest and procedures If the time allotted for the contest ends and there is no score/penalty, or scores/penalties are equal, the golden score system comes in to play. This means that the first judoka to score a point will win the contest or the first penalty to be awarded will immediately decide the contest. The process starts with the referee calling "Soremade". The time clocks are then reset – there is no time limit in the golden score period – and the contest restarts. There is no rest period between the end of the original contest and the start of the golden score contest. The first score/penalty, whenever it comes, decides the outcome. Scoring Scores are awarded for techniques in tachiwaza (standing work) or newaza (ground work).There are three scores in judo: ippon, nearly ippon (waza-ari) and yuko (the intention to make ippon but without complete success). If a judoka scores ippon they are immediately declared the winner. Penalties/disqualification rules All penalties are divided into “slight” infringement or shido (a type of warning) and “grave” infringement or hansoku-make (direct disqualification). For technical and tactical faults that do not affect the integrity of the contestants and are not against the spirit of judo, the judoka will receive shido penalty. The repetitions of technical and tactical faults, which are penalised with shido, are cumulative and a maximum of four faults can be given. This means that after a fourth shido the contest will be stopped and the opponent will be declared the winner by ippon. There are several circumstances which result in disqualification (hansoku-make): 1. When hansoku-make results from “progressive” penalties (four shidos), the disqualified contestant is allowed to continue to compete in the repechage rounds etc. including the bronze medal contest, if applicable. 2. In the case of direct hansoku-make for “protection” of a contestant (diving head first onto the mat), the competitor is allowed to continue to compete the repechage rounds etc. including the bronze medal contest, if applicable. 3. In the case of direct hansoku-make for acts against the spirit of judo and/or application of dangerous techniques, the competitor is excluded from the competition. If it is hansoku-make for acts against the spirit of judo a sanction can be added. For details, please refer to the IJF Sport and Organisation Rules (SOR) and Refereeing Rules. Award ceremony If hansoku-make has been given for “protection” of the athlete (diving head first onto the mat), or for four shidos, medals and places should be awarded. If hansoku-make has been given for acts against the spirit of judo, the IJF Jury will make a decision on how medals are awarded. Judo Judô / Judo Winning technique In order to provide information on which technique was used to win the contest, the IJF uses codes (140 of them) which are listed together with the contest score in the result reports and contest list. These codes are mostly used by statisticians. The full list of codes is available on the IJF website. Protests/appeals No protests against the decision of the referees will be accepted.
