Edward BIRKETT is Thomas Edward, Private 14582 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment the son of Henry and Alice M Birkett of Alkborough, he enlisted at Scunthorpe, he was19 years of age when killed in action on the 12th April 1917 and interred in Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery, Maucourt, France, he is mentioned in the Lincolnshire Star dated 11th August 1917. Sydney CLARK, further detail required Arthur COOLING born at Waddingham, resident of Alkborough and enlisted at Scunthorpe 1806, 1st/5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, serving as a Lance Corporal at the time of death, dying from natural causes on the 8th June 1915, he is buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Sidney ESCREET born at Stratford, Essex the son of William Ayers and Edith Mary Escreet of Aldborough, he enlisted at Frodingham as Private 1597 in the 5th Bn. Lincolnshire Regt., died of wounds, aged 18, and interred in Le Treport Military Cemetery, Siene-Maritime, France. Frank FOSTER born at Alkborough the son of William and Hannah Foster of Alkborough, enlisted at Grimsby and was serving as Lance Corporal, 271, 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, aged 23 when he died 11th April 1916, interred in Le Touquet-Paris Plage Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Ernest A. LANE was Ernest Arthur, Private, 242395, 5th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment, born at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire the son of John and Lydia Lane of Goxhill, he enlisted at Lincoln and reside at Walcot, killed in action 17th October 1918, age 22 and interred in Vaux- Andigny British Cemetery, Aisne, France. C. Fred PICKUP is C. Frederick who served as Private 12497 8th Bn. Lincolnshire Regt., born at Coleby, resident at Walcot and enlisted Scunthorpe, killed in action 26th September 1915 and commemorated on the Loos Memorial. Harry POOLE, further detail required Edwin SENGER, born at Barton-upon-Humber and a resident of Alkborough enlisting at Lincoln as Private 9765 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, killed in action 16th June 1915 and commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Carey VESSEY, Lance Corporal 241395 5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. Born at Walcot, enlisted at Scunthorpe and a resident of Whitton, killed in action 11th April 1917 and having no known grave is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Department of the Somme, France. Edgar YORK recorded as being born at Doncaster the son of Benjamin and Martha York of Alkborough, he enlisted at Gainsborough as Private 15399 in the 2nd/5th Battalion The Lincolnshire Regiment, aged 25 when killed in action on the 21st March 1918 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France 1939 - 1945 Sydney COWLING WAS Driver T/139801 Royal Army Service Corps, the son of Frederick and Ruth and husband of Mary Elizabeth Cowling of Winterton, aged 23 when he died on 26th October 1943 and interred in Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Burma © Lincolnshire Family History Society 2009 George DAWSON Guardsman 2664342 5th Battalion Coldstream Guards, he is reported as having died of wounds in the Scunthorpe & Frodingham Star dated 14.10.44 aged 23 on the 25th September 1944, [note: his age given as 22 in the CWGC database]. Interred in Brussels Town Cemetery, Belgium. Alfred GAUNT is recorded as William Albert Private 4972286 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, the son of Herbert and Sarah, husband of Vera Gaunt of Barton upon Humber, reported in the Scunthorpe & Frodingham Star dated 5.8.44 as being killed in action aged 32 on 24th June 1944, interred in Tilly-sur-Seulles War Cemetery, Calvados, France. he formerly served in the Sherwood Foresters. Leonard GELDER is believed to be Leonard Arthur Flight Sergeant 1495770, Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve who lost his life on 20th December 1945 and is interred in Heliopolis War Cemetery, Egypt. Geoffrey THORNTON is Geoffrey Hemsworth Thornton, Private 1476365 of the 1st Bn., East Lancashire Regiment, reported in the Scunthorpe & Frodingham Star dated 27.3.45 as Driver Geoffrey Thornton aged 18 when killed in action on the 1st march 1945 the son of Joseph W. and Ethel Thornton of Alkborough, he is interred in Reichswald Forrest War Cemetery, Kleve, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
