218 wind turbines 487,100 families CO2 777,000tonnes avoided CO2-emissions/year 560MW installed capacity Aspiravi _3 FOREWORD Dear Reader, We are proud to present this brochure to you. Although we are rather modest by nature, we were - quite frankly - very impressed when these annual results were completed. On the one hand because of the projects which were realised last year, and on the other because of the path we have forged for ourselves since the inception of our company. We have comfortably surpassed the 200 windmill mark! Thanks to our 218 turbines and our other installations, almost 800,000 fewer tonnes of C02 were released into the atmosphere last year. We now produce enough green energy to match the annual consumption needs of almost half a million families in Belgium. In October 2015, we welcomed 2,200 visitors to our construction site in Bruges, as part of Company Open Day. It was great to see everyone enjoying their visit (for many people especially, stepping into the base of a real wind turbine will remain an unforgettable experience!), and their enthusiasm was infectious. But the public’s significant interest in this event demonstrated above all that there is widespread 2015 support for green energy. The numerous conversations we had left us in no doubt: citizens realise that renewable energy is the future, and we all need to undertake joint action on this front. This burgeoning consensus was apparent at the Climate Conference in Paris last year, but on a worldwide scale. Citizens and politicians are convinced more and more of the urgency of making the step from traditional fossil fuels to sustainable, environmentally friendly energy. And they recognise the importance of specific agreements and measures for the sake of the environment and climate. Continuing down the path of nuclear energy and re-commissioning nuclear power stations is not the right solution to the problem, in our eyes. It is at odds with our conviction in the importance of renewable energy. We will not solve the energy problem in Belgium by keeping nuclear power stations open for longer, but simply postpone it for another ten years. A long-term vision for electricity production in our country is therefore vital. Now that the collective consciousness and a sense of responsibility to achieve climate objectives are growing worldwide, we need to make sure that Belgium doesn’t fall behind the pack. Aspiravi already makes a significant contribution towards sustainable solutions - together with our shareholders and cooperants. Our plans for 2016 are also ambitious and promising: we are constructing 37 new wind turbines in Belgium and 5 on the island of Curaçao. We are aware of the fact that none of this would have been possible without the support of our shareholders (96 municipalities and VEH) and thousands of citizen-cooperants. Their joint efforts and involvement are crucial for our success, but their encouragement also helps us to progress. We hope that this brochure gives you an informative picture of Aspiravi’s activities. We are working towards a sustainable society for future generations! Since 2009, many municipalities have formally signed up to actively cooperate in Europe’s climate efforts. By signing the Mayors’ covenant, they have promised to increase energy efficiency and the use of sustainable energy sources in their territories. The Mayors’ covenant for Climate and Energy is unique in its kind. This decentralised, ‘bottom-up’ initiative brings thousands of local and regional authorities together. With their local activities, they take responsibility for the European windmill park (and worldwide) climate policy. In Belgium, 235 mayors have already signed the covenant. In concrete terms, they promise to make a 20% reduction in C02-emissions in their territories by 2020. Municipalities decide for themselves how they will achieve this. For example by insulating actively buildings, through car parks for electric cars or ... with wind turbines. cooperate A windmill park is the ideal means of achieving the ambitious climate objectives. A windmill park considerally increases the amount of green energy produced, quickly and easily. Furthermore, citizens can participate in the Aspiravi wind farms. In this way the citizen can also be a partner in the fight against global warming. This is how we work together, mayors and citizens, towards a sustainable society. And a pleasant, liveable future for future generations. Find out more about the covenant: www.covenantofmayors.eu.
