THE JACOB COLLECTION | 3 An Introduction from the Collector Like every imaginative child, I was struck by the wonder of the stars: their glow in the darkened sky and formation of patterns, and allusions from the realms of mythology. Beauty, I found, was not the only magnet of fascination. The “odd”, the eclectic, and even the paradoxical commanded attention. When I began collecting, I found my interests were disparate and subjective. There was necessarily no thematic unity or defining biases - rather what spoke to the heart, the intellect, the imagination. Although my life work eventually was defined by the objectivity of mathematics and the immutability of numbers, my tastes on the other hand were broad: the alchemy of changing colours, the dynamic of human evolution in science and art. An exquisite dolphin-decorated sleigh of possible royal provenance, along with an Edison-Type Tin Foil Phonograph have never seemed to me incompatible. They are analogous to that wondrous stratosphere of co-existent stars and planets. Iconic nudes of Zorn align with the gentle eroticism of Icart. An Indo Herat carpet, a George I wing chair, a Queen Anne card table, the striking craftsmanship of Stickley - all form the mosaic of human achievement.
