Outreaching Particle Physics to Developing Countries Kate Shaw The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) EPS-HEP 2015 25 July, Vienna Developing countries account for 80% of the worlds population but only 28% of the worlds scientists come from these countries We don’t know where the next Curie or Einstien will originate from 2 Sustainable Development • the need to solve environmental and developmental problems requires scientists • investment into educational, technological and cultural institutions play a key role in growing a knowledge-based economy • scientific research at universities drives quality of education at all levels 3 Advance of the knowledge based society Fundamental Science Applied Science Technology, Engineering and Innovation Sustainable Development 4 Gaza 5 Islamic University of Gaza 6 AlAzhar University Islamic University of Gaza Al-Azhar University Al-Asqa University 7 Muhammed Alhissi Muhammed Alhissi – Gaza “My dream is to obtain a PhD in Physics and do research” “Thanks to ICTP, I applied for a joint master scholarship, and I got it. I am glad for this but not glad enough since I do not know how I will travel to Italy from this big prison "Gaza”!” “Even when the crossing opens, there are more than 10,000 people in front of me waiting to travel. “ “Sometimes, I feel that my dream will vanish. Many students lost their opportunities to study abroad” 8 Issues for students Interest in Research: .Students do not see a degree in physics leading to anything other that a teaching career .Students often have little or no exposure to research .Badly equipped laboratories demotivate students Awareness of opportunities: .Students often are not aware of opportunities to study abroad, or possible career paths Brain drain: .Students who do continue their studies abroad often do not see opportunity back in their home country and do not return 9 Issues for Academics Isolation: .Lack collaborators, funding for conferences, visits Universities are often seen only as teaching institutions .Little opportunity for funding for research .Faculty saturated with teaching Brain drain: .Physicists will often leave their home country 10 Physics Without Frontiers .Stimulate interest in Research .Raise awareness of opportunities .Fight the brain drain .Promote physics research 11 Physics Without Frontiers Palestine 12 Physics Without Frontiers Lebanon 2015 At Lebanese University, Beirut 24 April, Friday 09.00 Welcome & introduction 12.00 Lunch 09:15 Lecture I: Standard Model of Particle Physics 13.00 Lecture V: Introduction to the Hands on Session Ahmad Zein Assi (ICTP) Kate Shaw (ICTP) 10:00 Lecture II: Discovering Physics with Hadron Colliders 14.00 Hands on Session using LHC Data Kate Shaw (ICTP) 15.30 Combination and Analysis 10:45 Break 15:45 Virtual Visit with ATLAS Control Room 11.15 Lecture III: Detecting Particle with ATLAS 16.30 Lecture VI: Careers and Opportunities Remi Zaidan (University of Iowa) Ahmad Zein Assi (ICTP) 17.00 Certificates and Goodbye Physics Without Frontiers 14 Role Models 15 Where have we been occupied Palestinian territory - Reference Map LEBANON Mediterranean Sea Nahariyya GOLAN Beit Jann Zefat HEIGHTS Rama Acre Bi'na Lake Tiberias Haifa Tiberias Nazareth 'Afula Ram On Pardes Hanna Ma'ale Gilboa' Hadera Jenin Legend Baqa el Gharbiyya J E N I N First administrative level capital Hofit Kefar Monash Populated places Tubas Netanya T U L K A R M Main city T U B A S Lebanon Qalansuwa Tulkarm International boundary Armistice Demarcation Line Et Tira Nablus First administrative level boundary Herzliyya QA L QI L I YA N A B L U S Qalqiliya Elevation (meters) Kfar Saba 2015 Kafr Qasim S A L F I T W e s t 1,500 - 2,000 Rosh Ha'Ayin Salfit B a n k 1,000 - 1,500 n Tel Aviv a d r 800 - 1,000 o Bat Yam J Egypt 600 - 800 R A M A L L A H 400 - 600 Lod 200 - 400 Rehovot Ramallah/ Al Bireh Yavne A R I H A 0 - 200 ( J E R I C H O ) A L Q U D S Below sea level Gedera ( J E R U S A L E M ) Jericho Ashdod 2013 West Jerusalem Gan Yavne East Jerusalem Qiryat Mal'akhi Bethlehem Ashqelon B E T H L E H E M Qiryat Gat JABALYA GAZA Jabalya Hebron Dead Sea DEIR AL Gaza BALAH A L K H A L I L Dier Al Balah ( H E B R O N ) KHAN Bet HaGaddi YUNIS RAFAH Gaza Strip Khan Yunis Peduyim Rafah PalestinianBeersheba Ak Karak 0 10 20 30 E G Y P T km I S R A E L JORDAN Territories As Safi Disclaimer: The designations employed and the presentation of material on this map do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Secretariat of the United Nations concerning the legal status of any country, territory, city or area or of its authorities, or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries. Three major demographic factors correlated with the likelihood of a young person choosing physics at Alevel. We must learn the barriers preventing young • Gender people from different backgrounds choosing STEM, in particular physics has the largest gap • Socioeconomic status • Ethnic background 27 Summary Pool of well educated and motivated men and women from developing countries who need opportunities for study and collaboration .Scientific opportunity must be based on merit, not on ones country of birth or economic background .There is a huge untapped potential of scientists throughout the world, we and our institutes must reach out and collaborate 28 Thank you! What if the next Curie or Einstein is a student in a country where scientific research and education is not a priority? 29.
