District Profile Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand The district of Udham Singh Nagar is situated in the south-eastern part of the state of Uttarakhand. The district has seven tehsils namely Kashipur, Kichha, Sitarganj, Bazpur, Jaspur, Gadarpur and Khatima. For development purposes the district is divided into seven community development blocks. They are locat- ed at Jaspur, Kashipur, Bazpur, Gadarpur, Rudrapur, Sitarganj and Khatima. Seven development blocks are further divided into 309 Gram Panchayat. There are 688 villages out of which 674 are inhabited and 14 are uninhabited. DEMOGRAPHY As per Census 2011, the total population of Udham Singh Nagar is 242,285. Out of which 114,585 were males and 127,696 were females. This gives a sex ratio of 1114 females per 1000 males. The percentage of urban population in the district is 4.10 percent, which is much lower than the state average of 30.23 percent. The decadal growth rate of population in Uttarakhand is 18.81 percent, while Udham Singh Nagar reports a 6.53 percent decadal increase in the population. The decadal growth rate of urban population in Uttarakhand is 39.93 percent, while Udham Singh Nagar reports a 263.3 percent. The district population densi- ty is 122 in 2011. The Scheduled Caste population in the district is 19.68 percent while Scheduled Tribe comprises 0.16 percent of the population. LITERACY The overall literacy rate of Udham Singh Nagar district is 73.10 percent while the male & female literacy rates are 81.09 percent and 64.45 percent respectively. At the block level, a considerable variation is noticeable in male-female literacy rate. Bajpur has the lowest literacy male and female rates at 75.45 percent and 56.59 percent respectively. Khatima block has the highest male literacy rate at 85.24 percent and Kashipur has the highest female literacy rate at 70.21 percent. Khatima block has the highest rural and literacy rate at 76.79 percent and Kashipur has the highest urban literacy rate at 82.83 percent. Lowest rural and urban literacy rates are found at Bajpur at 64.46 percent and 72.33 percent respectively. Source: Census 2011 SOCIO-ECONOMIC The three sectors of the economy – primary, secondary and tertiary – reflect the direc- tion of growth of any region. In Udham Singh Nagar the secondary sector contributed the maximum share of 53.07 percent to Gross District Domestic Product (GDDP) which is higher than that of Uttarakhand’s share of 37.80 percent to Gross State Domestic Prod- uct (GSDP) in 2013-14. The district’s primary (agricultural) sector contributes about 1/10th to GDDP (10.01 percent) while the tertiary sector’s contribution is 36.91 percent. The GDDP of Udham Singh Nagarin secondary sector is more than double compared to that in Uttarakhand. On considering Net District Domestic Product (NDDP), Udham Singh Nagar has 10.43 per- cent of share in the primary sector, 47.15 percent secondary sector share, while 42.42 percent of the income comes from the tertiary sector. Uttarakhand, as a state, gets 10.31 percent of its output (NSDP) from the primary sector, one third from the secondary sec- tor (33.43 percent); but is certainly led by the tertiary sector (56.26 percent). The per capita income or average income measures the average income earned per person in a given area in a specified year. Udham Singh Nagar’s per capita income (Rs. 11,55,43) is less than that of the state (Rs. 1,12,428). Low per capita income is usually an indicator of poverty in a region. According to the Planning Commission, Government of India, the proportion of rural population living below poverty line in Udham Singh Nagar with Poverty Ratio (PVR) of 45.7 . Udham Singh Nagar urban poverty is with PVR of 48.88 . 68.04 percent of the poor are in rural and 31.96 percent are in urban. Considering the distribution of poor across districts of urban and rural Uttarakhand, 17.08 percent of rural poor population and 29.3 percent of urban poor population are in Rudraprayag. CHCs have the highest spread, followed by PHCs and then sub- health centres. Hence, CHCs and PHCs cater to a higher proportion of population than sub- health centres. The Sub-Centre is the most peripheral and first contact point between the primary health care system and the community. The district account for only 132 contractual teachers, of which 55 are male and 77 are female. 608 out of 1143 Govt. elementary schools have in Udham Singh Nagar have Anganwadi Centres. In other words, 53.1 percent of all Govt. schools have Anganwadis. In Udham Singh Nagar, a typical school has 5.3 teachers on average at elementary to higher secondary grade, while it is approximately 5.3 teachers at the elemen- tary level.
