This summer, designer Barbara Tfank and her husband were invited to stay at the American Embassy in Madrid, Spain, where her friend James Costos is the ambassador. Taking advantage of the trip, Tfank planned a short sojourn to Seville, a 2,200-year-old town which first captured her imagination when she was traveling Europe as a young girl with her mother. “Ambassador Costos said, ‘I hope there will be an homage to Spain [in your next collection]‘ and I said, ‘There will be,’ ” said Tfank at today’s presentation. The designer delivered on her promise in a suitably subtle way—“Because I don’t do costume-y clothes,” she said. This season Tfank’s signature brocade and evening gowns came with blouson sleeves and flurries of black lace, which conjured up the romance of Seville. Tfank also sourced several fabrics from Spain, including a gorgeous pink finely netted fabric embroidered with miniscule sequins, which appeared on a floor-length gown, and a white laser-cut bouclé which shone on a midi-dress adorned with black bows at the shoulders and waist. That design was originally intended as an option for Michelle Obama to wear on her visit to Spain; Mrs. Obama instead wore it to the annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge and Kids’ "State Dinner" at the White House a week after returning from her trip. Even without the exotic Spanish backdrop, the dress made an elegant impression—and will no doubt encourage Mrs. Obama to continue looking to Tfank for occasionwear. She also trained her focus on sleeves. Cut voluminously, they enhanced the sumptuous silhouette of a taffeta dress worked in a delicate floral pattern, as well as a second frock covered with embroidered tulle. “Despite that people think I only sell cocktail dresses, my customers buy day pieces as well,” said the designer, pointing at a group of more informal yet impeccable designs. These included an elegant cotton sheath with puffy sleeves, a fitted dress with spaghetti-strap details at the shoulders and a third with a feminine jacquard jacket trimmed with grosgrain. Madame Le Figaro BARBARA TFANK SS17 NYFW Preview “My Spring Summer ’17 collection is inspired and informed by my recent visit to Sevilla, Spain, where the moorish archways of the Alcázar direct the eye toward beautiful vistas laced by the filigreed lightness of the architecture and the patterned intricacy of its tiling, setting tone and vision for the exuberance.” OBSERVER L’express Styles New York Spring 2017 - Barbara Tfank Livingly Yahoo Taiwan Fashion Unfiltered As you entered the Laura Heller Gallery you were greeted by soft, remixed electro- harp music and Barbara Tfank’s elegant Spring/Summer 2017 collection. The models graced the gallery one by one, decked in the stunning, light-reflecting satin silhouettes. Tfank circled the room greeting reporters, photographers and friends; her demeanor emulating the poise of her designs. New York native, Barbara Tfank felt instantly inspired for her S/S 2017 collection after a recent trip to Seville, Spain this past summer. Tfank said her designs were influenced by “the mixture of the Moorish architecture and the flowers and cutouts” throughout the city. When designing, Tfank makes textiles her priority even before she designs the shape of the dress. All of the looks captured Tfank’s classic and sophisticated shapes. But unlike her usual collections, Tfank included more neutral and black pieces which did not garner as much attention as her pastel colored looks. The yellow daisy spaghetti strap slim dress paired with the yellow daisy coat stole the show and alluded to many of the looks Tfank has designed for First Lady Michelle Obama. Other notable looks around the gallery included Tfank’s stunning satin abstract dresses and her use of sparkle tulle overlay. One of the models, Becca, a first time model for Tfank and NYFW, noted the flattering cut and print of her rose floral circle skirt tea-length dress. She loved Tfank’s choice of fabrics and welcomed her selection of a simpler strappy shoe to bring a more casual and comfortable element to the already cosmopolitan look. Overall, the collection was classically elegant, and Tfank achieved her eclectic vision and homage to Seville. This collection will effortless make any woman feel transformed and easily embrace her femininity. WASHINGTON SQUARE NEWS DAHLIAS AND MAGNOLIAS .
