Plan to arrive in Madrid before 5:00 PM on May 24 to take the bus from Madrid Airport to Valladolid. Classes commence, Thursday, May 25. Course Offerings: Students will be placed into courses at the Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced level, following a placement test. Students at all levels will attend classes 4 hours per day, 5 days per week, as follows: Nivel Inicial (5 units) Credit for SPAN 150 - Accelerated beginning Spanish (equivalent to SPAN 101 & 102) Nivel Intermedio (5 units) Credit for SPAN 201 or SPAN 202 Intermediate Spanish - Course will fulfill CSUSM graduation requirement Nivel Avanzado (5 units) Credit for SPAN 301 or 350A Advanced Spanish in a Study Abroad Setting - Course can be applied towards Spanish Major/Minor Nivel Superior (5 units) Credit for Span 450B Advanced Seminar in Spanish in a Study Abroad Setting - Course can be applied towards Spanish Major/Minor Actividades Extracuricurales (1 unit) Credit for Span 199 Intensive Spanish Practice in a Study Abroad Setting Program Fees: The program cost is $2,895. Amount may vary on date of final payment depending on currency fluctuation. Program Fees include credit for 5-6 units, room and board in private room, medical insurance, field trips/activities. Airfare is NOT included. We accept cash, personal checks, or money orders but prefer final payment via Cashnet. Make checks payable to "CSUSM". Ø Deposit: All students must pay a non-refundable deposit of $300 in the Office of Global Education by February 16, 2017. Ø Final Payment: Payment $2,595 program fees must be made in the Office of Global Education by March 16, 2017. Student Forms: All forms are due to the Office of Global Education by March 16, 2017. • Study Abroad Application Form • Medical Disclosure Form • Air Travel Release & Hold-Harmless Statement • Foreign Study University Contract A and Attachment A • Homestay Application Form • Personal Conduct Agreement Form • Placement Test Form • Flight Information Form (can be accepted after the deadline, but please submit as soon as possible so arrangements can be made) Orientation: All students participating in the Universidad de Valladolid summer program must attend an orientation meeting prior to departure. The Orientation Meeting will be determined at a later date following receipt of final payments in late March/early April. Excursions/Field Trips: Your fee includes a series of excursions throughout the province and region surrounding Valladolid, Spain. These field trips will take place primarily on Saturdays, although some short trips may also be taken during the afternoon on weekdays. In addition, the Universidad de Valladolid has planned a schedule of extracurricular activities in which you are encouraged to participate. Homestay/Housing: All students are encouraged to stay with a host family. (Hotel accommodations are also available, at a much higher price). Host families are carefully selected by the Universidad de Valladolid to ensure students a family atmosphere and expose them to other aspects of Spanish life and customs. Host families provide a private room and full board for the duration of the academic program. Students who arrive in Spain early (before May 24, 2017), or who want to stay beyond the completion of the academic program (June 21, move out date June 22), may be able to make arrangements to stay with their host family for an additional cost. Financial Aid: Financial aid can be used on this program if students enroll in a minimum of 6 units, and have aid left over from the previous academic year. There are no extra loans or scholarships available through the school. Passports: Your passport number and passport expiration date are due in the Office of Global Education by March 16, 2017. Since the process could take 3-8 weeks, please apply for a passport as soon as possible. U.S. passports are good for 10 years. You can apply for or renew a passport at a designated county courthouse or at an authorized U.S. Post Office. Please call the main post office in your local community to find out if the post office offers passport services. Some post offices handle passport applications by appointment only. You can also print out the form from the U.S. State Department Web site at http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/forms_847.html To apply for a U.S. passport, you need: 1. Proof of citizenship (a previous U.S. passport; naturalization papers; or, if you were born in the U.S., a CERTIFIED copy of your birth certificate bearing the seal of the city, county, or state custodian of records). 2. A completed passport application form 3. Four recent identical 2 x 2 passport photos. Places like Costco, CVS or Office Max sell passport photos. (You can use one extra photo on your Homestay Application and one for the student ID in Spain .) 4. Fee: $110 for first-time passports, $140 for renewals. (An additional fee of $60 will be charged to expedite a passport.) Student ID in Valladolid: The card must be carried at all times for documentation of your student visa status. The card allows you to travel in the region and to take advantage of student discounts. Travel Arrangements/Airline Tickets: Students must make their own travel arrangements to Spain and should plan to depart May 23 in order to arrive in Madrid by the afternoon of May 24. Dr. Francisco Martin will meet students at the Madrid Airport. The bus departs for Valladolid at 6:00 pm. If you do not arrive at the designated time and day, you must make your own travel arrangements to Valladolid. Information on train and bus travel will be available at the orientation meeting. You may return any time after the program ends on June 21 (check out by noon on June 22 from homestay). Buses will depart for the Madrid airport on a regular schedule. It is best to book flights after 12 noon. Some online travel options can be found at the following links: www.studentuniverse.com, www.kayak.com www.statravel.com Some students may also want to take advantage of the time after the program ends to visit other parts of Spain and/or Europe. A number of travel agencies specialize in student budget travel arrangements, and can help you purchase train or bus passes, Youth Hostel memberships, etc. such as STA Travel: www.statravel.com. STA offers additional travel services to students such as the ISIC card, refundable tickets (usually less $100), tickets that are valid one year with change ticket prices as low as $25.
