I Definition: z0 is a zero of order m of f if f is analytic at z0 0 00 (m−1) and f (z0) = 0, f (z0) = 0, f (z0) = 0, . , f (z0) = 0, (m) but f (z0) 6= 0 . 3 / 10 Zeros of Analytic Functions I So, if f has a zero of order m at z0, then the Taylor series for f about z0 takes the form f (m)(z ) f (m+1)(z ) f (z) = 0 (z − z )m + 0 (z − z )m+1 + ··· m! 0 (m + 1)! 0 m h 2 i = (z − z0) am + am+1(z − z0) + am+2(z − z0) + ··· m = (z − z0) g(z) where g(z) is analytic at z0 and g(z0) 6= 0 in a neighbourhood of z0 . 2 I Example: f (z) = cos (z) − 1 + z =2 has a zero of order 4 at z = 0 since z4 z6 f (z) = − + ··· 4! 6! 4 / 10 Isolated Singularities of Analytic Functions I Definition: An isolated singularity of a function f is a point z0 such that f is analytic in some punctured disk 0 < jz − z0j < R but f is not analytic at z0 itself. I Example: f (z) = exp (z)=(z − i) has an isolated singularity at z = i . I If f has an isolated singularity at z0, then it has a Laurent series representation 1 X j f (z) = aj (z − z0) j=−∞ in the punctured disk. I Singularities are classified based on the form of the Laurent Series. 5 / 10 Isolated Singularities of Analytic Functions Definition: Suppose f has an isolated singularity at z0 and that 1 X j f (z) = aj (z − z0) j=−∞ on 0 < jz − z0j < R. P1 j I If aj = 0 for all j < 0, so that f (z) = j=0 aj (z − z0) , then z0 is called a removable singularity. I If a−m 6= 0 for some positive integer m but aj = 0 for all j < −m, then z0 is called a pole of order m of f . I If aj 6= 0 for infinitely many j < 0 then z0 is called an essential singularity of f . 6 / 10 Removable Singularities Suppose f has a removable singularity at z0.Then 1 X j f (z) = aj (z − z0) j=0 2 = a0 + a1(z − z0) + a2(z − z0) + ··· ez − 1 z Example: = 1 + + z23! + ··· z 2! I f is bounded in some punctured circular neighbourhood of z0 I limz!z0 f (z) exists. I f can be redefined at z = z0 so that the new function is analytic at z0. Define f (z0) = a0 . 7 / 10 Poles Suppose f has a pole of order m at z0. Then a a ( ) = −m + −m+1 +···+ + ( − )+ ( − )2+··· f z m m−1 a0 a1 z z0 a2 z z0 (z − z0) (z − z0) cos z 1 1 z2 Example: = − + + ··· has a pole of order 2 at z2 z2 2 4! z = 0 m I (z − z0) f (z) has a removable singularity at z0 I limz!z0 jf (z)j = 1 . I Lemma: f has a pole of order m at z0 if and only if m f (z) = g(z)=(z − z0) in some punctured neighbourhood of z0 where g is analytic and not zero at z0. I Lemma: If f has a zero of order m at z0 then 1=f has a pole of order m. If f has a pole of order m at z0, then 1=f has a removable singularity at z0, and 1=f has a zero of order m at z0 if we define (1=f )(z0) = 0 . 8 / 10 Essential Singularities Suppose f has an essential singularity at z0. Then a a ( ) = ···+ −2 + −1 + + ( − )+ ( − )2+··· f z 2 a0 a1 z z0 a2 z z0 (z − z0) (z − z0) 1 1 1 Example: exp (1=z) = 1 + + + + ··· z 2!z2 3!z3 Theorem (Picard): A function with an essential singularity at z0 assumes every complex number, with possibly one exception, as a value in any neighbourhood of z0. 9 / 10 Summary Theorem: Suppose f has an isolated singularity at z0. Then I z0 is a removable singularity , jf j is bounded near z0 , limz!z0 f (z) exists , f can be redefined at z0 so that f is analytic at z0 . m I z0 is a pole , limz!z0 jf (z)j = 1 , f (z) = g(z)=(z − z0) in some punctured neighbourhood of z0 where g is analytic and not zero at z0. I z0 is an esential singularity , jf (z)j is neither bounded near z0 nor goes to 1 as z ! z0 , f assumes every complex number, with possibly one exception, as a value in any neighbourhood of z0. Can use this theorem to classify isolated singularities without constructing the Laurent Series. 10 / 10.
