Pretty good, for a century-old bookBy Rick CookThis is an historically oriented account of Indian philosophy from the days of the Rig-Veda on. As such it's interesting and informative, if not up to date.Indian philosophy is a very complex subject with a lot of subtle distinctions and technical language. It is hard to follow no matter how it is approached, but Dasgupta' begin-at-the-beginning approach at least provides some context. However it is not easy going, given the nature of the subject and the amount of area covered. This isn't a book for bathroom reading, but it will provide the interested reader with a general background on the subject.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. India philosophycal contribution to human thoughtBy Pedro LopezIt is NOT only a related history, but a comprehensive and practical approach of all the indian systems. A nice initial approach to Indian way of thinking, and also a very ordered approach, trying to make a clear and comprehensive view from the old vedic and brahmanic stage, traveling trough Upanisads and arriving to buddhism. Includes an analysis of the yoga system, several specific schools of thought and general principles of indian philosophies. Excellent detailed reference system. This is the first volume of Surendranath Dasgupta's five volume work on the history of Indian philosophy. Starting with the earliest movements each philosophy is not just described but explained in detail and shown in its place in history. This includes vedic thought, yoga, buddhism and many others.Professor Dasgupta provides an argument that philosophy was the highest calling in India to the extent that it rivalled or even surpassed the ancient Greeks and provided unity across a large and diverse country. Certainly his writing will provide a radical change in world view to anyone unaccustomed to viewing India as a philosophical powerhouse. This book is written in clear language, but this is not a simple topic as it covers a huge range of thought and philosophies. The reader should be prepared for an education.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
