State of N e w Hampshire By Her Excellency Jeanne Shaheen, Governor A Proclamation BY HER EXCELLENCY JEANNE SHAHEEN, GOVERNOR EXECUTIVE ORDER NUMBER 97-4 an order regarding the flying of the General John Stark Flags WHEREAS, General John Stark was one of the most distinguished heroes of the American Revolution to hail from the State of New Hampshire; and WHEREAS, General John Stark led a brigade of volunteer citizen soldiers from New Hampshire into a triumphant battle against the British on August 16th and 17th, 1777, in Bennington, Vermont, in order to protect his native New Hampshire from invasion; and WHEREAS, it was at Bennington that General John Stark inspired his troops to victory with his immortal words, "There are your enemies, the Red Coats and the Tories. We must beat them or tonight Molly Stark sleeps a widow;" and WHEREAS, the New Hampshire Sons of the American Revolution and Molly Stark Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will be presenting the State of New Hampshire on Flag Day, June 14th, 1997, with a replica of the "Stark's Militia Brigade Standard" which is considered to be one of two possible flags flown by General John Stark at Bennington; NOW, THEREFORE, I, JEANNE SHAHEEN, GOVERNOR of the State of New Hampshire, by authority vested in me by Part 11, Article 41 of the Now Hampshire Constitution, do hereby order that the State of Now Hampshire fly "Stark's Militia Brigade Standard" on the flagpole adjacent to the statue of General John Stark on the State House lawn on the following dates of significant historical importance to the State of New Hampshire: June 17th, Bunker Hill Day; August 16th, Battle of Bennington; and August: et 28th; General John Stark's Birthday; and that the State of th th New Hampshire fly the "Bennington Flag" on April 19 , Patriots' Day; June 14 , Flag Day; August 17th, Battle of Bennington; and September 17th, Constitution Day. Given under my hand and seal at the Executive Council Chambers in Concord this twelfth day of June, in the year of Our Lord, one thousand, nine hundred and ninety seven. GOVERNOR OF NEW HAMPSHIRE .
