Luke 1:42 On this feast, we praise God who has taken the sinless TODAY’S READINGS Virgin Mary, body and soul, into His glory. FIRST READING In our first reading, from Revelation, we find God’s temple The vision concerning the woman clothed with the sun. in heaven opened and the Ark of the Covenant revealed. (Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab) The most sacred item in Israel’s history, the Ark had been missing since the Temple’s destruction in 586 B.C. PSALM The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold. Thus, John reports some startling news. Even more startling (Psalm 45) is his revelation that the sacred vessel is now a woman, who is mother of the royal Son of David, the Messiah. SECOND READING Christ, the first fruits; then those who belong to him. Of this woman, then, we sing to God as the ancient Israelites (1 Corinthians 15:20-27) sang: “The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold.” In the court of King Solomon, we glimpse Israel’s traditional GOSPEL arrangement: Solomon’s mother, Bathsheba, takes her place Mary praises God in the Magnificat. at the king’s right hand (see 1 Kings 2:19). (Luke 1:39-56) At Mary’s Assumption, as we see in Revelation, the queen once again takes her place at the right hand of the Son of David. Our second reading shows us why this is fitting: “in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order.” READINGS for THE WEEK What is implicit in St. Paul’s statement is revealed in Monday · August 16 Revelation. The consummation of Christ’s work has begun, Jgs 2:11-19; Ps 106:34-37, 39-40, 43ab, 44; Mt 19:16-22 as is proper, with the Assumption of the queen mother. Tuesday · August 17 John’s Apocalypse shows also the fulfillment of our Gospel. Jgs 6:11-24a; Ps 85:9, 11-14; Mt 19:23-30 There, Mary, pregnant with Jesus, retraces the steps of David as he brought the Ark to Jerusalem (see 2 Samuel 6). Wednesday · August 18 Mary “arose and went” into the hill country, just as David Jgs 9:6-15; Ps 21:2-7; Mt 20:1-16 “arose and went” to that region. Upon Mary’s arrival, Thursday · August 19 Elizabeth is awestruck, just as David was before the Ark. Jgs 11:29-39a; Ps 40:5, 7-10; Mt 22:1-14 The encounter causes the baby John to leap with excitement, as David leapt before the Ark. And Mary stayed in the Friday · August 20 “house of Zechariah” for “three months,” as the Ark Ru 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22; Ps 146:5-10; 22:34-40 remained in the “house of Obed-edom” for the same period. Saturday · August 21 Mary is the vessel of God’s presence, and she is queen Ru 2:1-3, 8-11; 4:13-17; Ps 128:1b-5; Mt 23:1-12 mother. She reigns now in splendor with Jesus in the heavenly Jerusalem. Sunday · August 22 Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b; Ps 34:2-3, 16-21; Eph 5:21-32 [2a, 25-32]; Jn 6:60-69 CATECHISM of THE CATHOLIC CHURCH The remarkable meeting of Mary and Elizabeth teaches us about the Person of Christ and the prophetic role of John the Baptist, who leapt in Elizabeth’s womb. Elizabeth referred to Mary as the “mother of my Lord” and affirmed that the Christ child was a fulfillment of all that God had promised through the prophets. By virtue of the Christ child within her, the reunion of Mary with her cousin Elizabeth represents the ultimate visit of God to his people. This mutual greeting of the two women, called the Visitation, is the second Joyful Mystery of the Rosary. §148 The Virgin Mary most perfectly embodies the obedience of faith. By faith Mary welcomes the tidings and promise brought by the angel Gabriel, believing that "with God nothing will be impossible" and so giving her assent: "Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be [done] to me according to your word." Elizabeth greeted her: "Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." It is for this faith that all generations have called Mary blessed. §149 Throughout her life and until her last ordeal when Jesus her son died on the cross, Mary's faith never wavered. She never ceased to believe in the fulfilment of God's word. and so the Church venerates in Mary the purest realization of faith. 4 St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church LA SOLEMNIDAD DE LA ASUNCIÓN DE LA SANTÍSIMA VIRGEN ¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres y bendito el fruto de tu vientre!
