Year 10 Music Week 3: Film Music Please email me your work if you are able to: [email protected]. This work relates to Area of Study 3: Film Music. Two of the eight questions on the exam paper will be on film music. Here are some example questions from the exam paper: - Identify the instruments - Explain how the musical elements have been used to create the mood of the extract - Suggest how characters have been depicted in the music - Explain how tension has been built up and released by describing the musical elements employed by the composer - State how music technology has been used - Explain why the music is appropriate for a scene. Task one: listening task – Pirates of the Caribbean Music serves an important purpose both in supporting the story and enhancing the meaning. If the music doesn’t match it could destroy the effect e.g. a war film accompanied by a cheerful tune. Search for ‘how music can change a film’ on YouTube and watch the Pirates of the Caribbean clip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn9V0cN4NWs) Which is your favourite version apart from the original? Why? Task two: listening task – Charlie Chaplin Search for ‘Charlie Chaplin - The Great Dictator - Funny Barber Scene’ on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaaDiCwfTxY) How does the music reflect the action on-screen? Task three: listening and research Create a fact file on one of the film music composers below. You must include: • Background information o Name and date of birth o Key musical features of their composing style o Pieces they have composed o Any prestigious awards they have won or been nominated for o Other interesting facts and information. • A review of at least one of their pieces o A musical description of the piece using MADTSHIRT o How the elements you have written about in your musical description match the theme/genre of the film o What you like about the piece o Anything you don’t like about the piece. Composers to choose from: ➢ John Williams ➢ Hans Zimmer ➢ Howard Shore ➢ Rachel Portman Task four: practical task If you have access to your instrument at home, keep practising towards your solo and / or ensemble performances. Try recording some performances and send them to me to keep me updated on your progress! .
