GEO / APN PALSAR CB Project • “Utilization of ALOS Satellite Data to Support Mapping and Monitoring Deforestation and Degradation in Indonesia ” was accepted by GEO in 2010 (GEO-CFP Program). • The Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) provides funding for the project in 2011. • Team Members: • RESTEC • Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) • The Ministry of Forestry Republic of Indonesia Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan 6 1. GEO / APN PALSAR CB Project • Requirements from Indonesia Ministry of Forestry still has difficulties to handle more than 1,000 scenes of ALOS/PALSAR data obtained through JICA’s project in 2009-2011. BPPT is interested in dual/full polarization data to be provided from ALOS-2 satellite. • To meet these requirements, RESTEC will invite around 10 trainees from Indonesia to Japan and provide two weeks training in May/June 2012. • Exploring more fund to continue this project. JAXA funded ALOS CB Project • The agreement of ”ALOS Application & Verification Project” was made between JAXA and LAPAN in 2009. • 17 participating organizations (ministries, agencies and universities) in Indonesia participated in this project. • JAXA provided them with a limited amount of ALOS data and technical trainings through RESTEC. • The project will be completed in March 2012. JAXA and LAPAN are discussing next project. Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan 9 2. JICA Funded Brazil Project • The Brazilian Institute of Environment (IBAMA) and the Federal Police Department (DPF) had a strong interest in PALSAR data to protect forest from illegal logging. • They asked JICA to transfer the techniques of PALSAR data to IBAMA and DPF in 2009. JICA launched 3 year project called “Utilization of ALOS images to support protection of the Brazilian Amazon forest and combat against illegal deforestation ”. • RESTEC, as an implementing organization of the project, transferred the techniques of PALSAR as well as RS and GIS software. • JAXA provided PALSAR data for IBAMA through the framework of ALOS K&C initiative.
