GERMISTON WHEELERS CYCLE CLUB PO Box 820, Isando, 1600 - Club House situated at Mr. Porra, Rand Refinery Road, Germiston . Website Blog address Twitter handle Email address http://www.germistonwheelers.co.za http://germistonwheelers.wordpress.com @germistonwheel [email protected] Greetings From the desk of Miss Communication So, how was your 947 Cycle Challenge? It sure was a tough one, and wouldn’t surprise me if it’s labelled Joburg’s Toughest Race by many. While I finished 8 seconds faster than I anticipated, being 12 minutes behind the winner hurt more than the hills. The worst part was from the Jhb CBD to Witkoppen Road, where I was continually chasing the bunch on the downhills. Once is okay, but do it on 5-6 hills it becomes hard going - I’ve heard of hill repeats but never on the downhills. Judging by the smiles and general vibe at the hospitality area, it would appear many members enjoyed the race, and although it was tough going it was a far course. While we’re talking about the hospitality tent, I’d like to express everyone’s thanks and gratitude to the club committee for the work they’ve done this year for the club (Another successful Carnival City Macsteel National Classic, we have new kit, enjoyed hospitality at Joburg’s biggest race, as well as the back-up at numerous club rides). More importantly how did you find 2014 as a year? Time has flown by and we’re almost at another Christmas holiday period. That also means it’s time for membership and licensing renewals. This year, you’ll receive a 1-pager with all your details on – it will be attached together with the newsletter (enter your ID number and the details will be filled out on the page. If nothing has changed, then you only need to sign the form and return it. If any details have changed, are missing or are incorrect then you can change it in the last column and return to the club. Membership fees for 2015 remain the same as 2014, and set as follows: Adults R300 New Adults R350 (includes a once-off admin fee) Pensioner/Student R200 New Pensioner/Student R250 (includes a once-off admin fee) Page 2-3: CSA Membership CyclingSA have increased the fees for 2015, so now membership with them costs R120, plus another R75 for Central Gauteng Cycling, and another R350 for a full racing licence (for Vets, Youth and Elite/U23 members only). This can only be done directly with CyclingSA and the only involvement from the club is the approval of the membership and licence options. Page 2-3 gives all the information you need to apply/renew online. Page 4: Team Discovery Important news for Discovery Vitality members… you can join Team Vitality for R600 per year. You’ll receive some vouchers for discount off a Garmin and other cycling/running accessories, but most importantly you will be able to get back up to 50% of the race entry fees (pre-entry rates only), subject to a maximum of R3000 per quarter or R12000 per year. At the time of publishing this newsletter, it was not certain of the CSA membership fee would be included or not. A note to members – if you sign up for the Discovery option, and you receive a HELPER’S TIME for the Carnival City Macsteel National Classic, please do not claim for this event – that would be considered FRAUD as well as defeating the point of riding to stay/get healthy. Currently the race is not listed as an event. Happy reading and riding – see you on the roads. During 2014, 25492 members registered with Cycling SA and we look to increase that number into 2015 with greater value add. Further enhancements have been made to the online system with new value add to members. The most important of these changes is that as a member, you can renew your membership on a 12 monthly cycle. Domestic racing licences (the additional R350 option), remain a January-to- December period to comply with UCI regulations. The online system has had some further enhancements made, in that we have now included an EFT facility through the SID platform, to reduce the inconvenience of having to log out and then do the EFT from your bank account, as well as some further enhancements to ensure that our staff can be used more effectively in providing improved value to members. Licence Structure Explained Full Racing Licence – this is only for the members that ride Vets, Youth or Elite/U23 categories This category of licence is for riders from the age of 17-years-old who wish to be eligible for provincial and national selection and respective colours award. The bearer of a full licence is entitled to partake in national championship or series race and be seeded accordingly. Those of who race in the UCI categories (Junior, U23 and Elite) earn UCI points, which will assist them in being seeded at future UCI category events, world cups and championships. The cost of a full racing licence is R350 per year, and the applicant has to be a member of an affiliated club, as well as be a registered member of Cycling SA. These can be done simultaneously. Membership – this is the option that every club member should select IF you enter 3 or more races per year. A membership of Cycling SA costs R120 per year. A membership holder is entitled to enter any event, irrespective of discipline, without having to purchase a day licence. A member is allowed to participate in a national series event, but will not be eligible for national or provincial selection. A membership of Cycling SA is the most basic form of licence and is an agreement of the rider to abide by the rules of the event in which they participate. Day Licence – if members enter less than 3 races per year, this option works out cheaper than the Membership. The Day-licence is designed to allow the absolute newcomers of the sport to participate within the rules and regulations of the sport. These participants, who do not hold a full licence or membership, need to purchase a day licence. By purchasing a day licence the rider agrees to participate in the event and abide with the rules of the event and those of Cycling SA for that day. A day licence costs R35 and is only valid for one day. Provincial levy Some provinces charge an additional levy to assist with the development and running of the provincial structures. These levies vary from province to province. Your province, which is made up of the clubs, will provide the information as to what and how these funds are utilised within your province, as these are determined by the input from clubs at regional and provincial meetings. The various province’s levies for 2015 are listed below: Gauteng Central R75 Gauteng North R50 2 Sedibeng R50 KwaZulu-Natal R50 Free State R75 Eastern Cape R50 North West R75 Limpopo R50 Mpumalanga R25 Northern Cape R50 Medical assistance Cycling SA has finalised a medical expenses benefit with Hollard Insurance Company. Each member will receive a benefit of up to R20,000 for the actual medical expenses incurred for any incident whilst riding or competing on their bicycle. The policy is fully downloadable off the membership website. Coupled to this, is the automatic assistance of Road Cover. Effectively, if whilst riding your bike, you are involved in an accident on the road, any claim with the Road Accident Fund will be handled by Road Cover, whilst your medical expenses up to R20,000 will be covered by Hollard Insurance Company. This offer is only available to all Cycling SA members. Rewards and membership card All Cycling SA members will receive a membership card for 2015. This card will accrue benefits to the member.
