Now our Faith Formation and Youth Ministry programs are starting. The Second Vatican Council’s document on Education has important insights to share with us as we begin a new catechetical year. The Council affirms that every human person “has an inalienable right to an education.” The Council says that this education should correspond to the destiny, talents, Fr. Paul Schmidt cultural background, sex, and ancestral heritage of each person. “A true education aims at the formation of the human person with respect to his ultimate goal” and the common good of human society. This education is physical, mental, and moral. It prepares students to become contributing members of the world around them. “Since every Christian has become a new creature by rebirth from water and the Holy Spirit, so that he may be called what he truly is, a child of God, he is entitled to a Christian education.” The Council outlines a long, gradual process of development. Forming a Christian conscience and communicating the truths of the faith is a life-long project. It does not end with elementary school, or with First Holy Communion, or Confirmation, or graduation from high school. Even priests, who have extra years of theology are admonished, in the document on the priesthood, to continue their education. Religious None of us is finished. The lack of continuing faith formation is evident all around us. Public figures are Formation - ignorant or misinformed about the teaching of the Church on crucial matters of life and death, economic justice, war and peace. It is painful to note that the voting records of some An Obligation of Catholic civic leaders and the policies of Catholic economic movers and shakers reflect little or very selective knowledge of what they should have learned years ago in Catholic school or faith formation classes. Some, indeed, feel that their faith should have no effect whatever on their political and economic decisions. In “The Church and the Modern World,” the Council called the divorce between faith and public life one of the major errors of our time. “Parents must be acknowledged as the first and foremost educators of their children.” Church programs can enhance the “home school,” but not substitute for it. Parents teach their children by what they do and say at home, and by what they do not do and say at home. If there is no prayer in the home or at weekend worship, the children learn that these things that happen at church are not really important. If vacation in the family means vacation from religion, children learn that “churchy things” only happen during the school year. On the other hand, if religion is alive in the home, with grace at meals, prayer at other times, religious symbols displayed, religious discussion encouraged, the things that happen at church reinforce the formation parents are giving to their children. The Council calls catechetical training “foremost” among the means of Christian education. “Such instruction gives clarity and vigor to faith, nourishes a life lived according to the spirit of Christ, leads to a knowing and active participation in the liturgical mystery, and inspires apostolic action.” That is a large task. It is difficult enough when children have the benefit of attending a Catholic school five days a week. It is more difficult when religion class is reduced to one session a week. The Council says: “The church is keenly aware of her very grave obligation to give zealous attention to the moral and religious education of all her children. To those large numbers of them who are being trained in schools which are not Catholic, she needs to be present with her special affection and helpfulness.” This is done chiefly through the apostolic activity of volunteers. We are deeply grateful to all our catechists and youth leaders who engage in this apostolate and to the staff members who direct them. May the Lord continue to inspire and bless them through the coming year.
