Outreach Notice GS-0404-06/07, Biological Science Tech (Fisheries) Three Rivers Ranger District Colville National Forest Outreach responses most useful by: December 10, 2018. Outreach will continue and overlap with the vacancy announcement which may be later in the fall. About the Position This is a permanent, part-time position. The position guarantees 18 pay periods in pay status and 8 pay periods out of pay status. The incumbent would serve as the Stream Crew Lead and support for the fisheries, and hydrology program on the Forest. The position will be supervised by the Environmental Coordinator, daily work assignments will be directed by the Fisheries Biologist/ Hydrologist. The duty location will be at Three Rivers Ranger District in Kettle Falls, Washington. The position would be the crew lead providing support for the stream crew completing hydrological and fisheries surveys for the Colville National Forest. The incumbent may also lead and provide support for the Forest Damage Response Team – a crew of 2-4 which restores human caused impacts to upland and riparian habitats. Primary Duties would include: Maintenance and data entry of the Watershed Improvement Tracking Database(WIT), Aquatics Survey database (AQS), Water Rights and Uses Database(WRU), and assist with Water Quality Data Base maintenance (AQS and State). Coordinate data collection efforts and assist District Biologist/Hydrologist in writing of Fisheries and Hydrology reports for large scale vegetation management projects and range projects. Assist District Biologist/Hydrologist with identifying, planning, and implementation of stream restoration projects. Participates in and assists with leading the forest water quality program (primarily bacteriological and temperature sampling). Work leader for the Seasonal Stream Crew – (2-6 individuals depending on staffing) Planning and implementing all aspects of crew support including hiring, equipment maintenance, training and career development. Provides training to crew members on stream surveying, Back Pack electrofishing, Aquatic Organism Passage (AOP) projects, and Road survey protocols. May serve as work leader for the Forest Damage Response Team Seasonal Crew (2-4 individuals depending on year). Participate in multiple interpretation and education events. Colville National Forest is located two hours north of Spokane. Colville National Forest is over 1 million acres with very active timber and fire programs. It is a place with moose, grizzly bears, and wolves, with a diverse range of vegetation from dry ponderosa pine to cold and wet cedar stands. Opportunities for hunting and fishing abound. Colville National Forest has groomed cross-country and snowmobile trails, many miles of backcountry non-motorized trails, over a hundred miles of single track motorcycle trails, a growing network of ATV routes, as well as opportunities for rock climbing, mountaineering, swimming, watersports, bird watching, and the Salmo-Priest Wilderness. The Colville National Forest is a beautiful place to live and work. Kettle Falls and the Surrounding Area Kettle Falls is named for the nearby Kettle Falls on the Columbia River, an ancient and important site for Native Americans which was flooded by the Grand Coulee Dam. Kettle Falls despite only having a population of 1,600 people has a natural food market/deli/shop (Meyers Falls Market), a brewery (Northern Ales), and several restaurants. In addition to the above the town also has a grocery store, health care facilities, and several parks. The town of Colville is 10 miles away it is the county seat having larger stores and services as well as a bi-weekly Farmer’s Markets and many other activities. Spokane is approximately 95 miles south of Kettle Falls and has the services of any major city including a major airport.
