CHANDLERet al.: The Fungus Gnats ... of Greece, its islands and Cyprus Introduction Knowledge of the fungus gnat fauna of the Mediterranean subregion of the Palaearctic has been increasing in recent years with the appearance of national checklists for Italy (MIKEI.LIet al. 1995) and the Iberian peninsula (CARLES-TOLRA2002), which have included the associated islands. Accounts of the species found in Israel (CHANDLER1994) and Malta (CHANDLER& GATT2000) have also appeared. At the same time checklists for this group have been provided for the Balkans (BECHEV1997c including 338 species. of which 275 were listed for Bulgaria) and updated lists for Bulgaria (BECHEV2002a and 2003: bringing the total for Bulgaria to 308 species and the Balkans to 356). BECHEV(l 997c) included a list of 27 species for the mainland of Greece. based on previous publications. Many of the additions reported here were included in the Fauna Europaea database con~piledby the first author (CHANDLER2004) with an indica- tion that they were new records to be published formally later. Information on the Greek fauna has been sparse in the literature and entirely based on collec- tions made by visiting entomologists from other parts of Europe. The lack of any local collec- tors means that the coverage is of necessity patchy although collections are now available from several parts of the mainland and from most of the larger islands, so a distribution pat- tern. at least for the Mediterranean elements of the fauna is beginning to emerge. It is recog- nised that many further species will be added, especially with more collecting in the northern parts of the Greek mainland, where a similar fauna to Bulgaria can be expected. but it is desirable to bring together here what is known as a basis for further studies. It is also consid- ered appropriate to include records for Cyprus as there have been several recent collections made there and much of the fauna is in common with that of the Greek islands. Earlier data on fi~ngi~sgnats of Greece is scattered in several publications (LOEWl869 and 187 1 ; LUNDSTR~~M19 1 1 and 19 17; MATIL-E1969a. 1975 and 1977b: PLASSMANN1984; VAISAUEN 1984a; CASPERS1991; CHANDLER1991; CHANDLERBi RIBEIRO 1995; BECHEV1995, 1997a and 1997b: MARTINOVSKY2001 ; CHANDLER& BLASCO-ZUMETA 2001 ; CHANDLER2002; KLJRINA2004). These papers together recorded 63 species from Greece. From Cyprus 34 species have been reported (GEORGHIOL1977; VAISIZNENl983a; CASPERS1991; CHANDLER1994; KURINA2004), most of them without precise data. In the present work the total is brought to 189 species for Greece and 69 species for Cyprus, with an overall total of 201 species. For comparison with Cyprus, the total for Crete is 70 species. Material The material on which this study is based has come from several sources. Most of it has been collected since 1970 but some older material in museum collections has also contributed to the data. The material examined by the authors can be summarised as follows: (1) NC examined the large collcctions obtained from many parts of the Mediterranean region hy Dr H. M-\I.ICKI.in thc 1970s and 1980s. This included rnatcrial from many parts of Greecc and its islands, as well as from Cyprus. Turkcy and several parts of the westcrn Mediterranean. As described by CASPERS(1991) thc primary aim was to obtain Trichoptcra mostly by light-trapping but sornetimes by sweeping and collecting of non-target groups was incidental, with thc fi~ngusgnats in relatively IOWproportion comparcd to aquatic groups. Three spccies from Crecce and one from Cyprus werc dcalt with by CASPEKS(l 991). (2) DB cxarnincd collcctions made in mainland Grecce by I. SIVKand B. HORVAT(SMNH) in 1994 and by himself in the same year and in 1982. BECHEV(l 997a and 1997b) descl-ibed a ncw species and subspecies from this material. (3) PC cxamincd collbctions made by several British colleelors, principally Alan STI:RRS(1972 Corfu and adjacent mainland, 1979 mainland Grcece and the Pclopponesc. 1980 Crete and 1982 Cyprus) Studia dipterologica 12 (2005) Heft 2: 255-314 ... and Ian MCLEAN( l980 Corfu. 198 1 Ccphalonia, 1982 Crctc and 1983 Cyprus), with s~nallcramounts of material obtained on Corfu by John Is~iw,Milos by David H~NSHAW,Paxos by Tony IRWINand thc Pclopponcsc by John KRAM~Kand David GIBBS.Some records from this material have already bccn published by CASI'ERS(1991), BECHEV(1995, 1997b), CHANIII.ER& BI.ASCO-ZUMFTA (2001 ) and CHANIII-ER(2002). CHANDI-ER(1994) and CHANDLER& RIBEIR~ (1995) cited records of some specich as from countries or islands but without further detail. More rccently PC examined specimens collected on mainland Greece and Cyprus by Pa~llGATT and Martin EBESER(Malta) and in scvcral parts of thc region from the collections of the Natural History Museum. London (BMNH), the MusCum National d'Histoirc Naturcllc. Paris (MNHN), the MLIS~LII~ d'Histoire-Naturelle, Neuchztel, Switrcrland (MHNN) and thc Zoological Muscum. Copenhagen. Dcnmark (ZMUC) obtained by several other collectors. (3)Jan SEVC~Khas determined material in the collection of the Silesian Museum. Opava (SMOC). This was mostly collected by Jindiich ROHACEK(Cyprus 2002 and Crete 2004), but also included some from the Greek ~nainlandand Corfu, respectively collected by B. MOCEKand V. VRAREC. The localities from which material has been examined are listed below under the six regions recognised for recording purposes in the Fauna Europaea project. For mainland Greece and the Pelopponese the name of the province, followed by a colon, precedes the locality details and localities on the Greek mainland are listed under the six administrative regions. For these regions the Greek name is given followed by the English name in brackets. The collector's name is given following details of each site and if all the material with that data is located in an institution this is stated following the collector's name. For islands the usual English spell- ing is given first and where the Greek spelling differs this is given in brackets. The spelling of many Greek localities varies considerably between different maps, mainly due to differing methods of transliteration from the Greek alphabet. If the spelling on the latest maps consult- ed differs consistently from that on the label, this is given in square brackets.
