PHILLIMORES PARISH REGISTER SERIES. VOL. CLXVI. (CUMBERLAND, VOL. II.) One hundred and fifty printed Cumberland Parish Registers. (TDarriaoea Edited by W. P. W. PHILLIMORE, M.A., B.C.L., AND C. W. RUSTON-HARRISON. VOL. II. XonOon : Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., Ltd. 124, Chancery Lane. 1912. X '% PREFACE. The second volume of the Marriage Registers of Cumber- land, containing the records of four parishes, is now placed in the hands of the subscribers, and the Editors hope to continue this series until all the Registers of the County have been printed down to the year 1837, when Civil Registration began. The entries are printed in abstract form as before, and the same contractions are used as in the previous volume. It must be borne in mind that the existing early Registers are themselves but transcripts, made under the order of Elizabeth in 1597, from the original paper Registers. Both the first and second volumes have been issued with the approval and support of the Cumberland and Westmor- land Archaeological Society, which indeed has subscribed for thirty copies of each, though the Editors regret to say that it is uncertain whether this practical aid will be continued. They understand that a proposal has been put forward for the issue of a fresh series under local auspices, but in view of these two volumes for Cumberland having been printed as part of a larger and long established series for a great part of England, they feel in justice to the interests of their general subscribers that the present marriage series ought to be continued. They would point out that this course is more especially desirable in relation to the bulky registers of towns and the larger country parishes, when the enormous number of baptisms and burials are likely to postpone indefinitely their being printed. But this marriage series can deal at once with such places, and forms a welcome key for the genealogist to their contents, as the Editors have found in dealing with the Marriage Registers of important towns like Nottingham, Derby, Cambridge, Winchester, Salisbury, etc. It should be remembered that previous to September, 1752, the civil or legal year was calculated as beginning on the 25th of March, instead of the ist of January, when the historical year began, so that a Marriage taking place on say 20th February, 1625, would be on that date in 1626 according to our reckoning ; so that to avoid uncertainty, both dates are some times given thus : —20th February, 1621,1625-6. In all cases where the Marriage is stated to have taken place by licence, that fact is recorded, as the searcher thereby knows that further information as to the age, parentage and vocation of the parties may be recovered from the Marriage Allegations. Thanks are again due to Miss Patricia Curwen for her valuable help in transcription. This time she has extracted the Marriages of Harrington. The Register of Crosby-on-Eden has been transcribed by Mr. T. H. Hodgson, F.S.A., the President, and that of Gosforth by Dr. C. A. Parker, a member of the Council of the Cumberland and Westmorland Archaeological Society, while another member, Mr. Ruston-Harrison, has been responsible for Stanwix, and has supplied the missing periods of those Registers and of Gosforth from the Bishops' Transcripts. No index is issued with this volume, as the Editors consider that it will be better to have one general index for the county on the completion of the work, instead of several for the various volumes. Further, it is of the highest importance that we should not delay in printing the Registers as rapidly as possible, as this is the only way in which their contents can be effectively preserved. Subscribers must remember that it is only by volunteer assistance that it is feasible to issue this or any series of Parish Registers, and they will greatly aid the Editors, whose work is honorary, if they will take every opportunity of making known the existence of this series. Contributors will greatly oblige the Editors if they will send at the earliest date any completed Marriage Registers in order to insure the continuance of this series with regularity. They would especially welcome the help of any volunteers who would undertake to transcribe the Marriage Registers of the City of Carlisle, the importance of which to the historian and genealogist can hardly be over-estimated.
