Th is program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I just two years ago, and each year has seen increasing strength and competitive capabilities in the USO team The University is proud of the team 's accom­ plishments, and pleased to support the program in every way possible, including scholarship aid to our athletes, recogni­ tion of the values of the program, and pro­ motion of intercollegiate athletics. I believe our USO team will be receiving some national attention this year, and I look forward to watching the season' events unfold. The campus is named Al cala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Di dacu s I (i .e. , Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural s etting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential , and recreational areas, as well . -. as the rail, bus and air terminals . , . :::.;.. ,_, ·: .{:, ~- ... Founded in 1949, USO is presently experiencing •t••i ~ I record attendance. The University includes a College of A rts and Sci­ rrt. ·'.., ences, and Schools of Business Admi nistration, Edu­ • j' cation, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by ~ .... high academic standards, small classes, and excel­ lent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well­ represented on campus. Students also attend USO from 24 foreign countries. Recreation and Athletic activities are expanding rapidly and include: sailing, crew, yoga, karate, su rf­ ing, modern dance, back-packing, and ballet. USD's intercollegiate sports for men include baseball, foot­ ball , basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, crew, and tennis. In women's intercollegiate sports, USO fields pro­ grams in basketball, cross-country, crew, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleybal l. 2 PEOPLE TO KNOW AT USD Rev. Patrick Cahill, C.S.V., Athletic Director Father Patrick Cahill , a member of the Viatorian Fathers and Brothers, came to the University of San Diego in 1979 with the responsiblity of administering the ex­ panding men and women's athletic programs. Since Father has taken over, USO has added men's cross country and soccer as well as women's softball and cross country to its intercollegiate program. Men's baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, cross country, and tennis moved in 1979 into the NCAA Division I ranks and the West Coast Athletic Conference, while women's basketball, volleyball, and tennis now participate at the AIAW Division I level , and softball, swimming and cross country are members of the AIAW Division II. Men's football remains a NCAA Division Ill participant and USO also boasts an inter­ collegiate crew porgram for both men and women. Father Pat has brought to the University his integrity, leadership and devotion to his job; he has given to the staff and student athletes at USO an added meaning to the word "friend ." Father Cahill has a B.A. from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, and a M .S. in Education with a Physical Education major from Eastern Illinois University. Prior to USO, he served St. Viator High School
