COLORADO GENEALOGICAL ETCETERA VOLUME VI PITKIN COUNTY 1900 UNITED STATES CENSUS COLLECTED AND PUBLISHEO BY RICHARD E. COWLING llH DEER TRAIL BOULDER, COLORADO 80302 COMMENTS OF THE COMPILER. THE 1900 CENSUS OF PITKIN COUNTY IS EASY TO SEE, BUT NOT ALWAYS EASY TO READ. THERE IS CONSIDERABLE MARKING OVER. THE NUMBERING IS OFTEN SO BAD THAT ONLY THE ORDER IN WHICH THE ENUMERATION WAS TAKEN IS GIVEN WITHIN. SOME OF THE ENUMERATIONS WERE RECORDED SO POORLY THAT IT WAS HARD TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN LETTERS DF SAME HEIGHT. CERTAINLY THERE IS CONSIDERABLE ERROR POSSiBILITY IN THE RECORDING OF THE FOREIGN BORN. THE ENUMERATORS SEEMED TO HAVE WRITTEN DOWN WHAT THEY THOUGHT THEY HEARO. THE ERROR POSSIBILITY IS COMPOUNDEO WHEN YOU REALIZE THAT MANY OF THE FOREIGN-BORN WERE RECENT ARRIVALS ANO HAO A MINIMUM OR NO PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR "ITALIANS" OR "AUSTRIANS," AND DO NOT FIND WHAT YOU EXPECT, IT MIGHT BE USEFUL TO GO THROUGH THE WHOLE CENSUS WITH AN EYE ON THE COLUMNS INDICATING PLACE OF BIRTH. THE AGES OF PERSONS COUNTED IS OFTEN IN ERROR. THERE is A COLUMN FOR YEAR BORN AND A COLUMN FOR AGE. APPARENTLY THE CENSUS TAKERS TOOK IT UPON THEMSELVES TO SUBTRACT THE YEAR FROM 1900. AT LEAST FOR ONE CENSUS TAKER, THE MATH WAS A COMPLETE DISASTER.
