Key to Highland Bibionids This key addresses only the species known to occur in Highland. *Requires detailed examination to separate or confirm species. Use Freeman, P. & Lane, R. 1985. Dilophus 2 Front tibia with a pair of large spurs Bibio 3 2 Legs all black in both sexes; female wings dark with pale tips. Dilophus febrilis Smaller than febrilis ; females with legs partly reddish and wings pale. Best identified from females. Dilophus femoratus , D. humeralis * 3 Body >10mm long. 4 Smaller species. 5 4 Spring flying, legs all black. St Mark’s Fly Bibio marci Late summer flying, legs partly red. Heather Fly Bibio pomonae 5 Autumn flying. 6 Earlier species. 7 6 Stigma extending well into costal cell (see diagram); females all black. Bibio lepidus Stigma ends on the vein; females all reddish. Bibio clavipes 7 Wings of male milky-white, of female blackish; front tibial spurs of almost equal length. Bibio leucopterus Wings of male white or yellowish, but transparent; tibial spurs markedly unequal in length. 8 8 Legs all black. Bibio ferruginatus * Legs partly reddish. Six other Bibio spp.* Front tibia of Bibio (L) and Dilophus . Stigma of Bibio lepidus (L) and B. clavipes .
