Kellys Directory Extract 1867 Beechingstoke Beechingstoke is a parish and village, in the Northern division of the county, Swanborough hundred, diocese of Sarum, archdeaconry of Wilts, rural deanery of Avebury, and the petty sessions division, union and county court district of Devizes, situate 7 miles east from that town, and one mile and a half from Woodborough railway station. The church of St. Stephen is a small structure, in the Second Pointed style of architecture, having a nave and chancel, with a small eastern gable pierced for 2 bells: the building was restored in 1861, and contains stained memorial windows. The register dates from 1566. The living is a rectory, value £285, with 33 acres of glebe land and residence, in the gift of G. W. H. Heneage, Esq., and held by the Rev. Richard Nicholson, M.A., of Oriel College, Oxford. Here is a Parochial school, with a house for the master. There is a charity, called the Mayow charity, bequeathed by a former rector, of the annual value of £3, to provide clothing for the old and bibles and prayer-books for the young, who shall be regular attendants of the church. The Earl of Normanton is lord of the manor, and, with Mrs. Bruges, who holds under Corpus Christi College, principal landowners. The soil and subsoil are greensand, with a little clay. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 880 acres, and the population in 1861 was 180. Parish Clerk, David Wootton. Letters through Devizes.
