FOSDYKE, or Fossdyke, is a small and pleasant village, on the Holbeach road, near Fosdyke 'Vash :Bridge, 2 miles E. of .A.lgarkirk Railway station, and 8 ~ miles S. of Boston. Its parish comprises 6~1 inhabitants, and 2356 acres, including an allotment of 350 acres of fine marsh land in Holland Fen, ad· joining the North Forty-foot-bank and Fen Chapel, 12 miles north of Fosdyke, and reclaimed and em­ banked in 1864, by 'Villiam Bett, Esq., and now under cultivation. This allotment contains 151 inhabi­ tants. The principal landowners are the Rev. B. Beridge, and 'Villiam Bett, F. L. Hopkins and Samuel Smeeton, Esqrs. Fosdyke has its name from the great Roman Fossway, which here c:rossed the stream and swamps of the W elland, near the entrance of the river into the Great Wash. Frederick Cooke, Esq., and others are lords of the manor of Bewsolas ·with its members, for which a court baron or custo­ mary court is held yearly. The Church (All Saints) is a handsome structure, in the Early English style, rebuilt in 1870, on the site of the previous church, from the designs of Mr. Browning, of Stamford, at a cost of about £8000, wholly defrayed by the Rev. B. Beridge, rector of Algarkirk, with which benefice the curacy of Fosdyke is united. (See page 787 .) It consists of nave, with north and south aisles, a well proportioned chancel, with chantry chapel, sacristy and a tower, sunnounted by a wooden spire covered with lead. It contains a handsome organ, which was presented to the Rev. B. Beridge by the parishioners. This is the third church known to have existed on the same site. The first was an Early English fabric,. which was burnt down in the reign of George II., when the second, a poor brick building, was erected in its place. The fine ancient font has been cleaned, and its celebrated cover, which is upwards of 10 feet in height, restored and suspended from the nave roof. The Rev. B. Beridge also, in 1867, erected a hand­ some school near the church, with residence for the teacher. In the parish is a small Methodist Chapel. The "Act of Parliament for erecting a BRIDGE over the river 'Velland, at }'osdyke vVash, and for making a public way over the bare sands at that place," was obtained in 1811, and the worl\ was executed by a. .
