Furlong, Wexford, to Kirby: 1867 Enclosing the last remittance of Peter's Pence for year 1866, bringing the total to £951. Praying for the Holy Father. Requests 1. Favours for his congregation of missioners [favours not mentioned]. 2. Remission of obligation of Masses on Sundays and holidays for the past, for an Administrator of a parish. 3. Special powers to delegate faculty of imparting a Plenary Indulgence in 'articulo mortis' to any priest, who may be called on to administer to the sick. 4. Permission from Mgr. Capatti to appoint a young priest as P.P. This priest is not due a parish in line of seniority. Cardinal is well and gaining respect daily among the people. 4pp 3 2 January Holograph letter from +Paul Cardinal Cullen, Dublin, to 1867 Kirby: Cholera has left Dublin. Prayers of thanksgiving. Details of the cholera and how the Government took more care to stop the cattle plague. Fenianism seems to have died down but the people, though not Fenians, are discontented, as they have reason to be. Mr. Edmund de la Poer has been elected M.P. and will shake the superiority of the present Government. Kavanagh, who is armless and legless, was elected in Wexford, but the young Irish priests have only themselves to blame. Young Irelanders are numerous in Wexford and Meath and are the worst party at present to deal with. Great question at present is the dis-endowment of the Protestant Church. Aubrey de Vere's proposals on the subject. Writer expects that the Catholics will get little and he gives his own solution. Dr. Kieran of Armagh has not received the Bulls yet. 2pp 4 2 January Holograph letter from D. Ab. Testa, Subiaco, to Kirby: 1867 Thanks for auguri and photographic images. Praise of Dr. Kirby's kindness. Sent a gift of dolci to the Irish College. Writer's sister, D. Details. 6pp 9 8 January Holograph letter from +Matthew Quinn, Bathurst, to Dr. 1867 Murray, Bishop of Maitland: [see KIR/1867/31] Fact 1. Report on Abbot Gregory's conduct with a nun in Subiaco convent and inadvisability of his return to Sydney. 2. Account of Father McAlroy's brilliant work in a parish in the diocese of Goulburn. He should be the next Bishop of that Diocese. 3. Account of meeting with Dean Hanly, with details of the state of religion, with reference to P.P. and parish, around Widdin diggings. 4] Deplorable state of religion in the part of his own diocese which he has so far seen. The great evil is mixed marriages. Report that Rev. Show him also Mr. Murphy's reply. Mr. Murphy has not obtained the co-operation necessary to promote the loan, from ecclesiastics, which he had a right to expect. Reference to what could have been raised in Philadelphia, namely 100,000 dollars. If it is necessary that the application regarding perpetual adoration should come from the Bishop, would Dr. Kirby inform the writer. Fitzpatrick. 1p 22 16 January Holograph letter from +Paul Cardinal Cullen, Dublin, to 1867 Kirby: Glad to hear of peace in Rome, but will it last. Dr. Kieran got his Bulls and writer will consecrate him in Dundalk on February 3rd. Dr. Derry is to preach for Dr. MacHale at Dr. Cantwell's month's mind. Heavy fall of snow. Accidents on the ice in Dublin and London. It will kill the cholera - cholera has stopped. Doctors were powerless to cure it. Advice for Fr. Maher to care for his health and also for student O'Reilly. Reference to Mr. O'Shannassy's visit to a model school, where he mortified the commissioner by asking a teacher did he teach the catechism to the Catholics. Dr. Moran's article on Episcopal succession has settled the question.
