Government of Pakistan Federal Bureau of Statistics Sample Design Section Islamabad Subject: CODING SCHEME FOR ASSIGNING PROCESSING CODES FOR PAKISTAN SOCIAL & LIVING STANDARDS MEASUREMENT SURVEY 2010-11 ROUND-IV (DISTRICT/HIES SURVEY) A 11- digit coding scheme for providing processing codes to the sample villages/enumeration blocks (PSUs) and households selected for PSLM Survey 2010-11 is as under: STRUCTURE OF THE CODE POSITION I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 Position-I First digit code at position-I has been assigned to the four provinces of Pakistan, AJ & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, FATA and Islamabad as under: Province Code Punjab 1 Sindh 2 K.P.K 3 Balochistan 4 AJ & Kashmir 5 Gilgit-Baltistian 6 FATA 7 Position-II & III a. District Level Survey A two-digit code at positions II and III has been assigned to indicate district (stratum) in each province. In urban sub-universe, big city and other urban areas of an admn district has been considered as independent strata as per annexure-A & B. All rural areas an admn district has been grouped to constitute a separate strata within an admn district of the four provinces. Entire AJ & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, FATA and Islamabad (I.C.T) has been treated as a stratum separately. b. Quarterly Provincial Level Survey (HIES Part) A two-digit code at positions II and III has been assigned to show a stratum in urban areas of the four provinces, AJ & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and FATA. Big cities and other urban areas of an admn. Division has been considered as stratum. In rural areas, each district in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber/P.K provinces has been treated as stratum. All urban and rural areas of AJ & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and FATA have been adopted as independent strata separately as shown in annexure-C, D & E respectively. Position-IV One-digit code at position-IV has been assigned to sub-universe comprising urban and rural areas of each province of Pakistan as shown below: - Sub-Universes Code Urban 1 Rural 2 Position-V One digit code at position V has been assigned to indicate sub-stratum formed in urban domain of a district. In big cities one digit code at position V has been assigned to show sub-stratum i.e. income groups (low, middle and high) as shown in annexure-A. Similarly zero (0) processing code in respect of other urban and rural areas has been assigned as shown in Annexure-B and C. This code at position-V has been given to make the coding scheme compatible for both urban and rural areas respectively Position-VI A one-digit code at position-IV has been assigned to a quarter of the year for HIES part. Zero (0) processing code will appear at this position in respect of District- Level Survey. In the HIES Survey one digit code at position-VI has been allotted to a quarter of the year in all provinces, AJ&K, Gilgit-Baltistan, and FATA as giving below: - Quarter of Year 2010-11 Code 1st Quarter 1 2nd Quarter 2 3rd Quarter 3 4th Quarter 4 Position-VII, VIII & IX A three-digit code at position VII to IX has been assigned to sample primary sampling units (PSUs) i.e. Enumeration Blocks/Villages within stratum/sub-stratum of each province. Position X & XI A two-digit code at position X and XI will be given to sample secondary sampling units (SSUs) i.e. households within each primary sampling unit (PSU) of a stratum/sub- stratum in each province.
