The number of worshipping communities has grown, as has the membership of the church which is now around 85,000. London is a global city and its population is expected to increase by one million people in the next eight years, and about half of this growth will be in the Diocese of London. This will bring many opportunities and challenges. We want to see the church building communities, transforming lives and being a constant presence in an ever-changing city. Like other church dioceses, London must take a listening and adaptable approach in identifying how to best serve the needs of our extraordinarily diverse communities. We now find ourselves in an exciting new season. Sarah Mullally has been appointed as the new Bishop of London and takes up her new role from May 2018. “As one of the first women consecrated as a bishop in the Church of England, she has not only blazed a trail for others but lived out the principles of mutual flourishing and acceptance which I know will continue to bear fruit in London.” The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby “As a bishop in the House of Lords, I want to be a voice for people on the margins. As the bishop of London, I’ll be pointing out where there is hope.” Bishop Sarah Mullally Bishop Sarah is the first woman to hold this role and brings broad organisational experience having been the government’s Chief Nursing Officer. Her arrival and the ideas she will bring dovetail with the plans to start to set out a process for agreeing a new vision and strategy for the diocese to follow on from Capital Vision after 2020. We need to continue our energetic implementation of Capital Vision through to 2020, while also working out a new vision and strategy for the future. This needs to be done with the full engagement of many stakeholders across the Diocese. We want to do everything we can to support the mission and growth of the church in London in the future, and the Director of Capital Vision will play a key role in helping us do that. We are looking for a strategic leader who embodies our core values and is inspired to help us achieve our Capital Vision to 2020 and beyond; namely, we seek a Christian leader who is confident in living out their faith through this vocation, compassionate in serving others and creative in spotting and resourcing opportunities to encourage a thriving and growing church across London. It includes parishes, schools, chaplaincies and missional communities. The Diocese is overseen by the Bishop of London, assisted by Area Bishops, Archdeacons and senior staff, and administrated by the staff of the London Diocesan Fund (“LDF”). Its Cathedral is St Paul’s. Within the Diocese of London, there are: Over 4 million people 500+ worshipping communities 1,000 clergy and ministers 200 men and women in training for ministry 71,000 adults on electoral rolls 85,000 regular worshippers 150 church schools 52,000+ pupils 150+ chaplaincies in schools, colleges, hospitals, the Met Police, Heathrow, railways, prisons, theatres, the forces, football clubs, Canary Wharf, livery companies, shops and City institutions Millions raised each year for charities around the world 1,500,000+ visitors and worshippers in St Paul’s Cathedral each year 3 Capital Vision 2020 Capital Vision 2020 is our collective vision, which emerged from conversations with nearly 2,000 people. We share a vision of a Church for London that is Christ-centred and outward looking. We seek to be more confident in speaking and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ, more compassionate in serving communities with the love of God the Father and more creative in reaching new people and places in the power of the Spirit. To enable this we will by 2020: Communicate the Gospel more effectively, using the opportunities offered by new media. Equip and commission 100,000 ambassadors representing Jesus Christ in daily life. Invest in leadership and increase the number of ordinands by 50%. Enable new initiatives to fight poverty, inequality and injustice in London and worldwide, including our joint venture with the Church Urban Fund. Open up our church buildings to the wider community. Strengthen links between schools and their local Christian community. Double the number of young people involved in local Christian community. Create or renew 100 worshipping communities. Engage more closely with sport and the creative arts. Each pray for at least seven people that we may share with them the story of our faith. 4 Role Description Our aim at the London Diocesan Fund is to do everything we can to support the mission and growth of the church in London. The Director of Capital Vision will play a pivotal role as part of the Senior Management Group (SMG) and working with the new Bishop of London and Senior Staff in enabling the work of the diocese. The role covers Capital Vision 2020, the new vision and strategy development, and overseeing the Children and Youth Ministry, and Fundraising work. An ability to work with multiple stakeholders, emotional intelligence, strong listening skills, professional excellence, strategic thinking and adaptability are vital to the delivery of this role. We are seeking someone with excellent programme delivery skills that have been forged in complex, matrix environments that would translate well into the ‘loose federation’ context of the London Diocese. The Director of Capital Vision will be someone who brings a balance of clear process-awareness as well as a strongly relational approach and exceptional communication ability to engage and mobilise a diversity of stakeholders. This is a strategic level, team-building, culture-setting and partnership role working closely with the General Secretary, senior clergy, governing bodies and people across the Diocese. This role reports directly to Richard Gough, the Diocesan General Secretary and is a member of the 6-person Senior Management Group for the London Diocesan Fund. The role has the following direct reports: Capital Vision Assistant; indirect co-ordination of 10 project leaders of the various workstreams within Capital Vision 2020; Head of Children and Youth Ministry Support; Capital Youth Project Manager; and the Fundraising Manager. 5 Key Priorities and Principal Accountabilities The key priorities for this leadership role are: Being a strategic leader as part of the Senior Management Group of the London Diocesan Fund and working with a wide range of people across the Diocese. Supporting a wide range of stakeholders in taking forward Capital Vision 2020. Overseeing the development of a new vision and strategy for the Diocese of London. Overseeing the programmes of work relating to: Children and Youth Ministry Fundraising Senior Management Group (SMG) - As part of the SMG the Director of Capital Vision is responsible, together with the General Secretary and other members of the SMG, for the organisational health and development of the LDF. S/he is expected to contribute creatively to the organisational development of the wider Diocese, working alongside the Senior Staff and those responsible for ministry development and training. This is expressed in the LDF purpose of “doing everything we can to support the mission and growth of the church in London.” As Director of Capital Vision you would: Participate fully in the leadership of the Diocese as a member of the Senior Management Group, Joint Operations Team, and other bodies, through: Contributing to and, with others, shaping the overall strategy for the Diocese and the LDF Exemplary living out of the values and spirit of the organisation Doing everything possible to ensure the success of colleagues across the LDF and Diocese Supporting the General Secretary in his/her leadership role 6 Delivering Capital Vision 2020 - Supporting the senior leadership of the diocese in taking forward Capital Vision 2020 for the final 2.5 years through providing guidance and support to sponsors and priority leaders, making connections between priorities and ensuring the total programme is effective, retains buy-in across the Diocese and delivers the changes envisaged. As Director of Capital Vision you would: Ensure the Capital Vision 2020 programme maintains momentum and visibility over the remaining 2.5 years and ensure the activity has the envisaged impact. Manage the Capital Vision Assistant to report across the programme including data and RAG assessment to enable tracking of progress and challenging of momentum. Ensure the continuing existence and delivery of an ongoing plan for engagement including communications planning and momentum building through sharing of news online and in written form, and through providing resources and updates to gatherings around the Diocese. Lead specific projects as resources and skills require.
