The Republican Party of Sierra County Newsletter SEPTEMBER 2018 Volume 5, Issue 9 TO TURNOUT OR TO BE TURNED OUT! THAT IS THE QUESTION. (With apologies to William Shakespeare) In the June primary to choose the District 2 House of Representatives candidates, the total Republican vote for our four candidates was 32,349– only 22.4% of registered Republican voters in the District. Meanwhile, in the Democrat Party primary, there were a total of 34,720 votes cast for their two candidates - but only 19.4% of registered democrats in the district. In effect, 20% of voters in each party decided who the party’s nominee would be. Districtwide our winning candidate, Yvette Herrell, received almost 10,000 fewer votes than the winning Democrat, Xochitl Torres Small. In Dona Ana County Democrat votes were 11,626, fully 7000 more than Republican votes! This highlights the fact that Republican registrants are outnumbered by 33,000 or 23% in the District considered a Republican Stronghold! These statistics suggest that turnout and Independents are the keys to victory in November. Our Turnout needs to be on the Presidential election level rather than off-year level. In Sierra County alone this is a difference of 23% or 1740 votes! But “Our Turnout needs to be on the Presidential election of course we are more interested in Republican and right-leaning level rather than off-year level. In Sierra County independent voters. The difference in Republican registered votes alone this is a difference of 23% or 1740 votes!” alone between 2014 (off-year) and 2016 (presidential year) was over 400! One thing about being a Republican in Sierra County– we are involved and we vote. Witness 35% turnout in the June primary versus 22.4% Statewide and 16% of Dona Ana County Republicans. We can’t afford not to turn out this fall and to encourage our neighbors to do the same. I know I said that last election, but if anything the stakes have become even higher. The anti-Trumpers have already been out in full force whipping up Democrat turnout, but with the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, the whipping has reached fever- “We cannot afford any “sour grapes” voting. pitch. Democrats hope to stop the approval of Kavanaugh and take We should insist that losing primary candidates control of both houses of Congress, so that any future nominees will be get behind the winning candidates.” defeated along with any other swamp-draining measures Trump might introduce. Think about life with Nancy Pelosi again Speaker of the House and with Chuck Shumer as Majority Leader of the Senate. Economic improvements will grind to a halt. We just had the 5th PRC District primary decided by 27 votes after the recount. So if we can get 70% of the Sierra County vote for Yvette Herrell, that may be the offset for the Democrat majority in Dona Ana County. Steve Pearce will need at least that number to offset some of the large Democrat numbers in Bernalillo. Monte Newman voters in Hobbs must support Yvette Herrell wholeheartedly. We cannot afford any “sour grapes” voting. We should insist that losing primary candidates get behind the winning candidates. The required selflessness is exemplified by the letter from Chris Mathys on page 4. President trump abandoned a carefree INSIDE THIS ISSUE billionaire’s life to work for the American people and he has been attacked Russia collusion Pictures 2 mercilessly ever since, while fulfilling campaign promise after campaign promise. How can we not do our small part to help Elect Herrell or else…. 3 maintain a Republican majority? VOTE! Simple as that. We can’t stop a “blue wave” by ourselves, but we can help keep the District 2 Congressional seat. Democrats think extreme ideas will win them votes. Endorsements 3 Socialism—are you kidding me? Open borders—are you kidding me? Abolish ICE - are From the Chair 5 (Continued on page 2) ANY TIME YOU WORRY ABOUT TRUMP/RUSSIA COL- LUSION REMEMBER THESE TWO PICTURES. “On all these issues, particularly on missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space “This is my last election… after my election I have more flexibility.” - Obama to Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, March 26, 2012 “The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.” –Obama, during the third presidential debate, Oct. 22, 2012 So who is colluding with Russia? (Continued from page 1) you kidding me?! Pearce received 2599 votes in 2014; 3453 in 2016 from sierra County. So how about this for a turnout goal for 2018 - 3600 votes each for both Pearce and Herrell from Sierra County. To get there we need to vote and help our like- minded neighbors to do the same. We need independents to join us. Get over our shyness about meddling in other people’s business and remind our friends and neighbors and remind them again. The stakes are too high to be left in other people’s hands. We must remind our neighbors of the conspiracy of the leadership of the FBI and Justice Department to create the need for a special prosecutor to spend the last two years and millions of taxpayer dollars investigating Trump and turning a blind eye to the lies that justified the Special counsel in the first place The Justice Department has been used as an arm of Clinton Campaign and DNC. Remind them of the tax cut and reform; of the unemployment rate drop simultaneous with an increase in the labor participation rate; counter the claim of jobs created by the Obama administration by reminding people he spent almost a trillion dollars funding make-work “shovel-ready” projects that were steered to union shops. In most cases our small market votes are overwhelmed by Bernalillo voters, but in this election we can have an impact at both the House and Gubernatorial races. Just maybe, we can help turn the “Blue Wave” into a “Red Tide”!!!. MY VIEW How is it alright that the hierarchy in the justice department, FBI and who-knows-where-else in top level management can openly work against the wishes of the electorate to tip the scales and thwart the will of the electorate. After the cabal of Comey, Strzok, Rosenstein, Ohr et al. failed to prevent Trump’s election they colluded to accuse him of collusion, aided and abeted by CNN , CNBC, MSNBC, the NYT and WaPo. This isn’t even swamp - it’s quicksand threatening to strangle our col- lective will. And don’t tell me about the popular vote. Aside from the combined vote in California and New York HRC lost the combined popular vote as dramatically as she lost the electoral college. ***** I know I’ve said this before but how do we justify those calling themselves ANTIFA (Antifascists) using fascist tactics of vio- lence to intimidate those that think differently from them and our free press remain silent or even hail them as anti-violent. ***** Don’t vote for Yvette Herrell >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> And you help elect Nancy Pelosi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Speaker of the House Again. Voting for Democrat Xochitl Torres Small is a plus 2 for her (one less for Herrell, one more for Torres); not vot- ing is a plus 1 for Torres. If you stay at home, don’t complain about the sec- ond coming of Ms. “We have to pass the bill to see what’s in it.” Maybe even more frightening; guess who would become Chair of the Committee on Financial Services? Can you say “Impeach 45?” >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ***** “So, we’re finally all in agreement that Russia meddled in our elections. Now, we must come to an agreement about Vladimir Putin’s motivation. William F. Buckley had a rule to boil down complicated electoral calculations: Support the most viable, con- servative candidate. Putin has one, too. Support whomever will distract America the most. Call it the Putin Rule.” Kristopher Harrison, Opinion Contributor, The Hill, 02/22/18 ***** I missed our last meeting, so no recap. Our speaker last month was Wayne Johnson. A brief bio follows. On December 1, 2017, Wayne Johnson was appointed by Governor Martinez as the New Mexico State Auditor. He served Bernalillo County as Com- missioner for District 5 from 2010 until his resignation in March 2018. As Commissioner, Johnson championed trans- parency, ethics and accountability an pushed for meaningful change in county government. Johnson took that dedication to openness and transparency to the Office of the State Auditor. He firmly believes that the State Auditor has the duty and obligation to make sure that the public’s money is being spent wisely, lawfully, and in full view of the public. In eight months as State Auditor, he and his team have uncovered multiple issues of waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer funds. He is also looking for audit solutions to the State’s guardianship program to safeguard our seniors and is audit- ing Albuquerque’s criminal justice system to identify the gaps that cause the system to fail all New Mexicans and place our families at risk of violent crime. Page 3 CANDIDATES PEARCE, RICH AND HERRELL ARE BEST FOR NM By John Block, Friday, September 14th, 2018 at 12:02am As New Mexicans, we have many choices for the people who will lead our state forward, even in this age of political chaos. I am proud to say I always have been, and always will be, a proud New Mexican. My family has been here for centuries, many of them making a difference in state politics, such as my grandfather, former Democratic Corporation Commissioner Johnny Block.
