(USET) is a non-profit, inter-Tribal organization serving thirty-three (33) federally recognized Tribal Nations from the Northeastern Woodlands to the Everglades and across the Gulf of Mexico. USET is dedicated to enhancing the development of Tribal Nations, improving the capabilities of Tribal governments, and improving the quality of life for Indian people through a variety of technical and supportive programmatic services. Directing USET’s work are the shared goals to protect the inherent sovereignty rights of all Tribal Nations, to pursue opportunities that enhance Tribal nation building, and to ensure that the U.S. upholds its sacred trust and treaty responsibilities and obligations to Indian country. As part of the organization’s long-term strategic planning, USET’s Office of Economic Development was started in 2015 and tasked with identifying economic development activities throughout the USET membership. Guided by a comprehensive economic development strategy, USET economic development goals are based around supporting a thriving economic climate, nation rebuilding and sovereignty protection, capacity building, education and workforce development, partnership and collaboration, and quality of life and place. Purpose of the Directory With more than 600 Tribal Nation enterprises, businesses, and economic development opportunities listed, this directory introduces business opportunities and activities throughout the USET membership. The purpose of USET’s Tribal Enterprise Directory is to 1) inform USET membership what economic development activities are currently being offered by Tribal Nations; and 2) to offer contact information for these initiatives to promote nation-to-nation trade and/or economic partnerships to facilitate the development of strong Tribal economies. Structure of the Directory The Directory is listed first alphabetically by industry sector found amongst the USET membership. Initial sectors were identified throughout the USET Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) research phase as economic clusters. Additional sectors have been identified as new Tribally owned enterprises have been created and new economic clusters have emerged. Industry sectors were also selected and based heavily on description of industries in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). NAICS is the standard used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy. The Directory currently classifies Tribal enterprises into 20 industry sectors. The Directory sectors and the distinguishing activities of each are: • Agriculture – Agricultural production and agricultural support activities • Arts & Culture – Establishments that provide historical, culture, and educational benefits • Communication and Media – Publishing industries, including traditional publishing, the motion picture and sound recording, broadcasting and telecommunications • Construction – Construction of buildings and engineering projects (e.g., highways and utility systems) • Convention and Meeting Spaces – Establishments primarily engaged in organizing, promoting, and/or managing business and trade shows, conventions, conferences, and meetings • Development Corporations and Holdings – Holding of securities of companies and enterprises • Energy and Utility – Provision of utility services, including electric power, heat, natural gas, steam supply, water supply, and sewage removal • Entertainment & Amusement – Establishments that operate facilities or provide services to meet varied entertainment interests of patrons • Finance – Establishments engaged in financial transactions and/or in facilitating financial transactions • Food & Beverage – Food services and food and/or beverage consumption products • Health Care & Social Assistance – Establishments providing health care and social assistance for individuals • Hospitality – Establishments engaged in providing short-term lodging facilities USET Tribal Enterprise Directory – January 2021 1 Introduction to the Tribal Enterprise Directory Introduction to the Tribal Enterprise Directory • Information Technology – Establishments primarily engaged in computer hardware, software, and communication technologies • International and Domestic Investment Properties – Holdings or investments of properties or operations inside and outside the United States • Natural Resources – Activities revolving around producing and utilizing natural resources • Professional Services – Establishments that specialize in performing professional, scientific, and technical activities • Real Estate & Housing – Renting, leasing, or otherwise allowing the use of tangible holdings and related services • Recreation – Activities operating or providing services for recreational interests of patrons • Retail & Trade – Establishments engaged in retailing merchandise • Sports Teams & Clubs – Ownership of professional or semiprofessional sports teams or clubs The Directory also includes three index listings to help promote speedier search of Tribal enterprises.
