APPENDIX E 1 BC HOCKEY 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT Chair of the Board Report Randy Henderson The 2015 AGM catapulted BC Hockey into a new era in both governance and operational standards. I was committed to making the transition effective and a year in I am absolutely confident we made a very wise decision for the branch. As we continue to move forward we are going to need to be patient and trust that we are all working toward the same goal; Lead Develop and Promote Lifelong Hockey Experiences. It is indeed an exciting time in BC Hockey. We knew the structure would not be perfect and knew that refinements would create the organization we all want to become. Again, we recognize that patience and trust are key. Structurally, the Board has adopted the same vision for the Standing Committees as the Program Committees; namely having Subject Matter Experts embedded in the committees. We believe this will serve the membership optimally in guiding the board to sound decisions on your behalf. This necessitated the board meet more frequently this year as we engaged with experts in Policy Boards to ensure we defined our roles, responsibilities and procedures in step with modern Board methodology and refined the Terms of Reference to fit the reality of our needs. From the perspective of a first year, I am very satisfied and proud of the way the board has developed and completed business. We are dedicated to constructing the communication mechanisms and providing Orientation to new members at the Board, Committee and Task/ Work Group levels. Our Operations Groups have been very successful meeting the needs within their portfolios and we look forward to implementing their feedback toward advancing our quality service, and the advances we have made in providing quality services. At this AGM, delegates will be updated on a shared National/Branch Initiative regarding the Initiation Program. Branches across the country asked Hockey Canada to lead and they have responded dramatically by providing critical direction and resources. The rejuvenation of this program will once again push Canada to the top of ladder in providing research based, player driven, fun programming for our youngest participants. We will continue to strive to create the same research based, player driven developmental program for all our participants. With the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Report by the Federal Government last year, the Board acted and has endorsed a proposal to participate in the reconciliation process. We are working with the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activities Partners Council of BC to create a Memorandum of Understanding to assist with increasing opportunities for Aboriginal players, parents and coaches to become part of BC Hockey. This will be a tremendous opportunity for BC Hockey to once again lead the country. Recruitment and Retention is coming to the forefront across the nation. We must develop plans to not only maintain current numbers but grow our game. We look to the Minor Committee for best practices in this area and are eager to work with Hockey Canada on National Programs to grow the game such as the enormously successful Bauer First Strides Program. We need to set achievable objectives to grow the game and then implement plans to meet those objectives. We need to begin planning for players not yet out of the womb. I am confident working with entire spectrum of game partners including Hockey Canada, the WHL and the Vancouver Canucks we can grow our game for players of the future. As we witnessed this year, our partners, such as the Canucks, have been instrumental in assisting us with programs such as Sportsmanship Starts in the Stands. Our opportunities to attract new members will only come by providing a quality, safe, fun sport option for our youth. The office is continuing to try and meet the needs of MHAs by paying special attention to enhanced services for MHA development. On a variety of fronts we have tried to meet those needs and will 2 BC HOCKEY 2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT continue to ask our members where you want/need support. We need the MHAs to ensure their needs are pushed to the districts where we can get the Minor Committee providing the board with ideas to make us all better. The new Society Act changes will no doubt affect all MHAs and Hockey Societies. There are still questions regarding Member Funded versus Public Funded Societies we must get defined but the nuts and bolts of the changes should not be significantly altered in the coming months before the Act becomes in effect in November 2016. The two year compliance window
