This compares with a borough wide density of 129 residents per hectare and 52 per hectare in London. • There were 5,797 occupied households in this ward with an average household size of 2.56 residents, above the average household size for Tower Hamlets of 2.51. This was above the Tower 32.5% Hamlets average of 83.3% and was just above the London average 10.2% of 83.8%. The England average on this measure was 81.4%. • 12.8% of residents reported that their day-to-day activities were 4.4% limited to some degree by a long term health problem or disability, 1.6% compared to a borough average of 13.5% of residents. Very Good Health • 8% of residents provided unpaid care to someone who has a long Good Health term health problem or disability (1,203 residents). This was higher Fair Health than the Tower Hamlets figure for provision of unpaid care at 7.6%. Bad Health • 3.4% of residents provided 20 hours or more of unpaid care a week 51.4% Very Bad Health (513 residents). This was also above the borough average of 3.3%. Figure 9: Average Life Expectancy • Female life expectancy in Whitechapel was 81.8 years, above the borough average of 80.7 years. This compares to the lowest female life expectancy in the borough of 77.9 years in Mile End East and Female 81.8 the highest of 89.2 years in Millwall. • Male 72.8 Male life expectancy is 72.8 years, below the borough average of 75.2 years. In Tower Hamlets the ward figures ranged between 37% (St figure in England) and ranged between the lowest figure of 43% (St Katharine’s & Wapping) and the highest in Spitalfields & Banglatown at Katharine’s & Wapping) and East India & Lansbury with the highest at 66%.
