I am pleased to welcome you to another exciting season of Men’s basketball at Monterey Peninsula College. I appreciate the efforts and hard work of our coaching staff and players as they begin their 2002-2003-2004 season. Our basketball players have dual roles as athletes and as students. At MPC we are committed to the success of our players on the court as well as in the classroom. Head basketball coach, Blake Spiering, embodies this commitment. He is keenly interested in the academic endeavors of his athletes and their achievements both on and off the court. This basketball season will be an exciting one and I look forward to watching our players in action. Please join me in supporting and cheering on our team. Go Lobos! Kirk Avery Superintendent/President Monterey Peninsula College Kirk Avery has served as Superintendent/President at Monterey Peninsula College since April 1997. Dr. Avery came to MPC in July of 1992 to assume the position of Vice President for Administrative Services and was subsequently named executive Vice President/Assistant Superintendent three years later. Prior to coming to Monterey, he served five years as President of Cypress College, located in Orange County, California. Dr. Avery came to Cypress College from Palo Verde College where he was the Superintendent/President for four and a half years. He has a doctorate in Public Administration from the University of Southern California. Dr. Avery lives with his wife and two sons in Pebble Beach where he avidly roots for the Los Angeles Lakers when he’s not attending Lobo basketball games. 3 Welcome! Monterey Peninsula College is proud of its Men’s Basketball Program and the success they have achieved on and off the court. Head Coach Blake Spiering starts his secondfirst season as head coach of the Lobos. The Lobos will play an aggressive in your face defense and will push the ball up the floor on offense. You can look forward to entertaining, fast paced basketball. At Monterey Peninsula College we strive for our student athletes to have success on the court and in the classroom. Many of our participants have gone on to compete in basketball and complete their education at four-your institutions. This season will be no different. Many people work together to make this opportunity possible. The MPC administration, faculty and staff, including our President, Dr. Kirk Avery, and the Board of Trustees are very supportive of the athletic program. We rely on the athletic staff members pictured in this program to work together to enhance each athlete’s experience. Monterey Peninsula College has a rich tradition of helping student athletes achieve their goals. Thank you for your support of this effort. GO LOBOS! Lyndon Shutzler Athletic Director Monterey Peninsula College Lyndon Schutzler has been the Athletic Director for four years and the Division chair of Physical Education and Dance for 10 years. After attending MPC, Schutzler earned his bachelors degree in Physical Education from UC Santa Barbara. From there Lyndon earned a Masters degree in Physical Education from the University of Arizona where he won a college world series as an graduate assistant coach for the Wildcat Baseball team. HISTORY Monterey Peninsula College commenced its operation in September of 1947 on the campus of Monterey High School, holding classes from 4 to 10 p.m. daily. During this first year 87 acres of land were purchased on Fremont Street. The following September classes opened in converted barracks buildings with 280 students and 20 faculty members. The campus was originally designed for approximately1,000 students, but by 1957 the enrollment had approached this figure and it 4 was evident that new buildings were necessary. The engineering building was constructed in 1958, the library in 1960, and the art and music center and swimming pool in 1962.The junior college separated from the Monterey Union High School District in 1961 and became a separate junior college district. With this reorganization, the Carmel Unified School District became part of the Peninsula-wide junior college district. The student population continued to grow as well as the need for additional classrooms. In 1965 the building program was renewed, and
