The type of the bitwise operator expression is the promoted type of the operands. The rules of promotion are as follows: • If either operand is of type long, the other is converted to long. • Otherwise, both operands are converted to type int. In the case of the unary operator ~, Java converts a byte, char, short to int before applying the operator, and the resulting value is an int.
