History of Mobile Phones By: Rob Steiner How They Work • Phones are the more advanced generation of Walkie-Talkie’s. • They work by communicating through a Full Duplex circuit. • A single cell-phone carrier has aprox 830 different frequencies in a single location, which they divide into cells. • There’s something called a MTSO that keeps track of your location in a database, and provides which cell you are in when calls are placed or received. The Beginning • 1940’s: Car Phone comes out, allowing people to talk on the phone while out of the house. • April 3rd, 1974: Former Motorola employee Dr. Martin Cooper placed a call from the worlds first cell phone. • 1984: Motorola releases the “Motorola DynaTAC to the public. Utilized a numeric keypad, single line display, and a removable battery with 1hr. Life. Mobile Phone Breakthroughs • 1989: Motorola released the MicroTAC, which was the first “Flip-Phone”, which influenced the future of phones. It was 9 inches long, and 1lb. • 1993: IBM & BellSouth release first mobile phone with PDA capabilities, the Simon Personal Communicator. First phone to have Address book, calculator, pager and fax. Cont. • 1996: Motorola releases the Motorola StarTAC, which became the first ever “Clam-Shell” phone. • 1996: Nokia 9000’s released. First phone with a phone with a QWERTY keyboard. • 1999: Nokia 5210 reaches consumers. Big calling points was its durable, splash- proof case. • 2000: The EricssonR380 premiers. Utilizes a 21st Century touch screen, partially covered by a flip. Was the first phone marketed as a “Smartphone” • 2000: The Samsung Uproar hits the market, featuring the first mp3 capabilities. • 2001: Nokia 5510 is released, featuring a new design, a full QWERTY keyboard, and could hold 64 gb of music. 21st Century Cont. • 2003: Nokia 1100. Sold 200 million. Rumored to have been sold for up to 32,000 in online criminal communities due to its ability to intercept 1 time banking passwords. • 2004: Motorola Razor V3. Widely known phone, considered extremely sleek and stylish. • 2004: Nokia 7280 is released. Also called the “Lip-Stick phone”, with its extremely futuristic look. 21st Century Cont. • 2006: LG Chocolate KG800 which is a Slide phone, with heat sensitive touch buttons on its screen. • 2007: The first iPhone was released. It incorporated a auto-rotating screen, a multi-touch screen, a touch interface that replaces the qwerty keyboard. • 2007: LG Viewty is produced. This phones main selling point was its visuals, and the 5Mp camera on the back. 21st Century Cont. • 2008: Blackberry Storm is manufactured to outdo Apple’s iPhone 3G. This was Blackberry’s first phone without a QWERTY keyboard. • 2009: Sidekick LX2009 hits the market. Improvement from the original version, also freely supported social networking apps. Mobile Phones Today • Now phones can do and be used for numerous different things, such as Webcam, Scan, Hotspot, TV, Remote, Heart Meter, and much, much more. • Mobile phones became the new LAN line. • Bulkier then most people thought, but extremely efficient Future for Cell Phones • More sensors that could detect ambient temperatures and environmental conditions. • Talk about Facebook and HTC creating the Facebook Phone, with deeply integrated facebook features that uses a spin off of the Android OS. • Samsung released a prototype of a flexible phone, that you can bend any way. • Seunghan Song created the concept for the “Window Phone”, that reflects current weather conditions, and you blow on it to change to a phone.
