Our excitement is because of the great successes we have had over the last two decades. I would like to take this opportunity to talk about our education system and reiterate the importance of schools and quality education. Schools exert great influence upon us. They shape our character, mould our mental attitudes and build the foundation for the basic principles of life. A good education is essential for every individual and collectively for the society. Herman Gmeiner School was first established in 1986 in Faridabad, the first of its kind, offering a subsidiary function to the SOS Children’s Villages of India’s (SOS CVI) Family Based Care Programme in India. Since its inception it has, on account of its calibre and constitution, gone on to make a distinct name for itself. It has been able to garner great reputation and is favoured by many in all the regions our schools operate. The Herman Gmeiner Schools (HGS) are an integral part of the SOS CVI model in India and have not only helped its children acquire a superior scholastic education but also important life skills. 4 School Magazine: Prayas Teachers act as second set of parents to students who spend a better part of their day and in the long term, a better part of their childhood around them. Additionally, teachers also form the cornerstone of achievements of their schools and act as catalysts for growth. I would like to express my admiration and gratitude for their effort and conscientious work done by all the educators present at the Herman Gmeiner Schools. It is their diligent and unflagging dedication that has helped us scale these heights. I would also like to extend my congratulations to Ritu Tewari, Bhawna Sharma, Ajay Mishra, Laksha Rawat, Saumya Garbyal, Somya Dixit and Pranjal Rauhela from HGS Bhimtal who had, successfully secured a score of 10 CGPA as part of their 10th grade results last year. We are very proud of them all and hope you all continue to excel in all spheres of life! I also take this opportunity to thank all the parents for their support without whom the schools cannot function to its best. I wish HGS faculty and students all the very best in life and wish the schools a great future. Best Regards, S. Sandilya President SOS Children’s Villages 5 School Magazine: Prayas Secretary General’s Message Dear All, With this latest edition of Prayas, I’d like to extend my heartiest congratulations to all of you! SOS Children’s Villages has been operational in India for over 5 decades and one major contributor to its success is the quality of education offered by Herman Gmeiner Schools. 50 years back Herman Gmeiner schools were set up to cater to the needs of the children in the SOS Children’s’ Villages of India. Over time with increasing number of people wanting to enrol their children in our schools, we have opened the gates to all sections of society and today over 80% of our students are from communities outside of SOS Children’s’ Villages. I would like to thank all teachers and staff for setting and upholding highest standards of excellence. In words of Former President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, “Excellence is a continuous process and not an accident”. No matter what the difficulties, our teachers and staff have lived this every step of the way. They have helped our schools provide a stable, secure and motivating environment for the children to learn and grow, enabling them to become upstanding citizens of the country. I would like to applaud and congratulate all young girls and boys or Herman Gmeiner schools for dreaming big and working hard and living those dreams every day. I am sure you will continue to strive for excellence and will make all of us proud. Congratulations once again and my best wishes for Academic year 2016-17. Warm Wishes, Anuja Bansal Secretary General SOS Children’s Villages India 6 School Magazine: Prayas Message: by Director Education Mrs. Jyotsna Saxena Congratulations to all the staff members and students for the publication of 9th edition of the magazine “Prayas”. Education is not just a process of giving knowledge for a high profiled job but a lifelong process which creates an understanding of moral and ethical values to guide and make our students morally upright citizens of the country. Our school mission, in essence, identifies our critical focus, as HGS enables the development of the skills, knowledge, values and attributes needed for Lifelong learning, Community service and Global citizenship. This is further facilitated by Theme based experiential learning in the preprimary & primary sections to make a strong foundation for producing creative, compassionate & innovative adults. I am inspired by the possibilities that exist for our school this year and in the years to come. The Management, Parents, Students and the Teaching Fraternity are a team that complements each other's efforts in the above endeavour. Whether you are new to Hermann Gmeiner School or have been a part of our community for some time, please accept my invitation to participate with us, as we prepare our students for the future. I am very grateful to each and every member of the HGS Fraternity. Especially Our Co-workers who know very well how to synchronize and harmonize with our process of growth. Our Students who constantly show by their performance and conduct that it makes a difference to be a student of HGS. Last but not the least, Our Parents whose trust inspires us to move ahead. My best wishes to the teachers and the children.
