Science and technology play a major role in solving the various problems that human society is facing and helps us to realize safe and productive lives while promoting economic growth. Japan is a country that does not possess a large amount of natural resources, so it is our people and knowledge that will support our future development. Strengthening our science and technology capabilities is an issue that is essential for our future growth. In particular, the development of creative human resources who are active in the fields of science and technology is extremely important. Tatsuo Kawabata However, in recent years we have been confronted with problems such as the gradual retirement of Minister of Education, the generation of highly skilled engineers that have supported Japan’s monozukuri efforts in the past Culture, Sports, and the growing disinterest of our young people in monozukuri activities. The importance of a practical Science and Technology education that will train and cultivate new engineers has been reemphasized and developing and ensuring the presence of monozukuri human resources is an urgent issue that needs to be addressed. Given these circumstances, this competition provides students with the opportunity to undertake the planning, design, and construction of a small, formula-style racing car in an effort to pass a rigorous inspection that will evaluate the vehicle’s handling, concept, design, and cost management. It is a true test of the comprehensive monozukuri skills of the student participants. I believe that this competition is an extremely meaningful event that contributes to the practical education of engineers that will support Japan’s industries in the future and also contributes to the invigoration of engineering education. The planning, designing, and construction of a small racing car is a valuable opportunity for all these students to discover the enjoyment and challenge of monozukuri and the pleasure and importance of working together with your teammates toward a common goal. In the process, they will also gain valuable and useful knowledge of practical problem solving and applied skills, enterprising leadership abilities, and management expertise that far exceed what can be gained in the course of their daily engineering studies. I believe that this is a priceless experience for their future success in industry as an engineer. This will be the 8th Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan and I am delighted to know that the number of schools participating in this event has continued to increase each year. This year a total of 85 teams from both within Japan and from overseas will participate and this demonstrates just how highly regarded this competition is both within Japan and around the world. I would like to wish the best of luck to all the teams, academic advisors, and related university personnel participating in the competition, and I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan and everyone responsible for helping to plan and organize this event. Welcome to the 8th Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan The Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan began in 2003 and this year marks the 8th time that this competition will be held. The purpose of the competition is, to develop human resources that, through the support of government, industry, and academia, will contribute to the development and promotion of both automobile technology and industry by having the students play the main role in planning, designing, and constructing an automobile on their own in a competition of comprehensive monozukuri skills. This year, a record total of 85 teams have entered the competition with 75 teams coming from Japan and 10 teams coming from overseas. I take pride in the fact that the activities undertaken up to now as a part of this competition have been recognized both inside and outside of Japan and that the competition is attracting a high level of interest. Akio Hamada At this year’s competition the maximum number of teams that will be able to pass the document Chairman, screening stage has been increased to 75 teams from the 66 teams that were allowed to pass last year Society of Automotive and in order to confirm the completeness of the vehicles in advance, the teams are required to submit Engineers of Japan proof of shakedown certification. This was done in an effort to provide an opportunity for even more teams to participate in the competition in response to the increase in the number of team entries, while also helping to ensure safety and to facilitate smoother operation of the competition. As in the past, a follow-up program has of course been prepared for those teams that are unfortunately not able to pass the document screening stage in order to help prepare them for entry in next year’s competition. The preparation days on which the advance vehicle inspections have been conducted up to now have been increased to five days from four, including the period that the competition is held, in an effort to conduct the competition while giving highest priority to ensuring safety. Furthermore, in a continuation from last year, a driving demonstration of EV formula vehicles will be held and a new simulated vehicle inspection will also be conducted. Electric automobiles have been attracting a great deal of attention recently and it is expected that this will promote more technological exchange between the mechanical and electrical fields. Finally, in addition to wishing the best of luck to all the students on the participating teams, I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to all the representatives of industry, government, and academia for their support, cooperation, and sponsorship provided in these continuing tough economic conditions, to everyone in the host cities of Kakegawa and Fukuroi here in Shizuoka Prefecture for their considerable cooperation, to everyone at the corporations and universities that kindly dispatched staff to help run the competition, and of course to everyone on the event staff who helps support this competition and allow it to run so smoothly.
