Federal Railroad Administration Northeast Region The Northeast region is home to the nation’s busiest rail routes, many of which have seen regular passenger service for over 150 years. Today, multistate planning efforts will prepare the region for continued ridership growth into the next century. Higher Top Speeds between Trenton and New Brunswick, NJ There were more than 11 million boardings on the NEC in 2014 – accounting for over 36% of all Amtrak passengers. Work is underway to increase top speeds in New Jersey to 160 mph, which will be a new high for the Amtrak system. Planning efforts are studying ways to expand capacity and increase speeds on the rest of the corridor. Serving New Markets in Freeport and Brunswick, ME About 30 miles of new rail, 34,000 new rail ties, over 25 rehabilitated bridges and culverts, and 37 upgraded at-grade crossings have returned rail service to these two cities for the first time in decades, while laying the foundation for future additional frequencies. Reducing Travel Times from Springfield, MA to St. Albans, VT Improved track, roadbed, grade crossings, and bridges along 190 miles of the route in Vermont resulted in nearly 30 minutes of travel time savings. 27% Ridership Increase in the region since 2005 Federal Railroad Administration Northeast Region Region Characteristics Ridership Growth Route Diagram Regional Rank Global Rank (comparable to) FY15: 15.90 million Population 22 63M (United 20% of U.S. Kingdom) FY05: Economy 4 12.47 $3.5 Trillion (Germany) million 24% of U.S. +27% Since 2005 Land Area National average: 56 +31% (Sweden) 174,000 sq. mi. 5% of U.S. FY05 FY10 FY14 Funding by Corridor and Source Length Investments $M 2009-2015 Corridor (miles) Federal Non-Federal Total Northeast Corridor (DC-NYC-Boston) 457 $1,746 $445 $2,192 Albany - Rutland - Burlington 100 $19 $19 $38 Boston - Portland - Brunswick 145 $79 $39 $121 Boston - Concord 74 $2 $1 $3 New Haven - Hartford - Springfield 62 $201 $186 $387 Springfield - St. Albans 251 $133 $51 $184 New York City - Albany - Buffalo - 460 $220 $57 $276 Niagara Falls New York City - Albany - Montreal 381 $3 $3 $7 Philadelphia - Harrisburg - Pittsburgh 353 $59 $5 $64 Other Corridors / Freight n/a $162 $63 $225 Investments TOTAL $ 2,624 $869 $3,497 Includes HSIPR, TIGER, RRIF, and other investments.
