Dear Friends Of the YMCA, The year 2018 was a very special one for the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. In 2018, we celebrated our 150th year of serving Des Moines and surrounding communities with programs and services focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This is a remarkable record of achievement, made possible through the contributions of thousands of individuals who believed in our mission and dedicated themselves to our cause. As part of our year-long celebration, we completed one of the largest and most significant projects in our Association’s history: the MidAmerican Energy Mission Company Aquatic Center at the Wellmark YMCA in To put Christian principles into practice through downtown Des Moines. This magnificent facility, with programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for the Olympic-size Prairie Meadows Pool as its all. centerpiece, further enhances the Y’s reputation as the community leader in swimming and aquatics. At 10 branch locations, more than 100,000 individuals are served annually through programs and services focused in the areas of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Youth Development At the Y, children and teens learn positive values and positive behaviors, and have the opportunity to explore their own unique talents and interests. That makes for confident kids today, and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. Kids from low-income families often start school unprepared, and during the summer they fall further behind their peers – unless someone steps in to help. Children who take part in summer learning programs sponsored by the Y show an average of 3.3 months of growth in reading schools by the end of the six-week program. Through youth sports, summer day camp, resident camp and before-and- after-school programs, the Y provides 10,000 kids each year with a safe place to go and the opportunity to build positive relationships with peers and adults. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death among children ages 5-15 – and it’s almost entirely preventable. By providing children with knowledge and skills attained through swim lessons and water safety programs, the Y is helping save lives and opening the door to a fun, healthy activity that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Healthy Living Physical fitness important, but true well-being is achieved when we nurture the spirit and mind as well as the body. Programs at the Y provide education to support healthy lifestyles and opportunities to learn, grow and connect with others in meaningful ways. Our goal is to make the Y accessible and affordable for any individual who can benefit from the programs and services we offer. More than $2.2 million in annual financial assistance from the Y makes it possible for more people to take advantage of fitness facilities, medical programming, diabetes prevention classes, outdoor education and other services that support healthy lifestyles. YMCA-sponsored programs such as Girls On the Run – which helps girls in grades 3-8 become more confident, more joyful and more physically fit through a curriculum that incorporates running – are making a positive difference in the lives of kids and families. The Y provides financial assistance to meet the needs of almost two- thirds of the nearly 800 elementary and middle-school students who participate in the program each year. Social Responsibility The Y listens and responds to the ever- changing needs of our communities. Whether it’s reducing financial barriers to membership or providing support and encouragement to those who need it most, the Y fills the gaps that need filling and bridges the divides that need bridging. Through the Y’s Fatherhood Program, we have impacted the lives of thousands of children by engaging their fathers and providing men with the motivation and skills to be more loving, active and positive role models for their kids. Our YMCA Supportive Housing Campus fills a unique role in the community by offering permanent housing and wraparound services for 140 residents who were formerly homeless or at risk of homelessness.
